If I remember correctly they couldn't get passed the first round most times. They were known as team of chokers.
They have won one cup in 44 years and it took 14 years of drafting starting with OV. That sounds more like a broken clock being right twice a day formula over drafting and patience. They did trade Foresberg also. - VANTEL
Your totally ignoring the fact they were a great team for a decade from drafting, that's worth something and they won a Cup because of it, full stop.
If they weren't competing again two generational talents in Crosby and Malkin, 3 Hart Trophies, 3 Art Ross Trophies and 3 Conn Smythe Trophies between them as well as three Stanley Cups.
Kinda similar to the Canucks being a great team at the same time the Blackhawks emerged, if they get by the Hawks in 2010 they win the Cup imo |

When it comes to building, Hextall is definitely >> Benning - LeftCoaster
Hextall is a totally better carpenter then Benning, too bad he sucks so bad at GMing. |

I am not ignoring it. I think they have been a good team but again they have won the grand prize once which goes back to the original discussion , there is no real formula for success.

How can you say they didn’t have a formula? They spend more on scouting than any other team. They did their homework and it paid off. - 1970vintage

They've been a great team for a dozen years, great drafting will do that for you. I'd take that! Canucks were good for five years from drafting, hopefully happens again
Capitals have won the highly coveted Presidents Trophy three times in the past ten years - LeftCoaster
And we won it twice in two years... means more then the Stanley cup, I'll give you that. But in the past 10 years whos won it the most?
Then who?
The canucks with two are the 2nd best team over the past decade? I guess i'm forced to confess that you're correct.
How many has philly won?
Check mate. |

I thought Van sucked tonight. EP's play was great as usual. Virtanen and Boeser need to pot those chances.
(frank) do Biega, MDZ, Poilout suck. Having one of them you can get away with. Having all 3 - manvanfan
I missed a bit of the end...we were keeping it close at 2-0 but then was it Markstrom or just our brutal D that put it away for the Pens? |

Former Canuck and now VP for Begas was on the radio the other day. One of the things he said that was a source of their success was that the owner was willing to do what it takes - he gave them the budget to hire the largest scouting staff in the NHL, because they knew that from the time they got franchise approval to the expansion draft would be their most critical time. |

True. Sure we want the team to draft well it's just that it's such a small part of the overall process to get to the cup. Like you said Vegas came within a few games of the cup with ZERO drafting over a 10-15 year period to 'build' with. You can make an argument both ways really. Some championship clubs have over 10 players that were drafted by the championship club but many clubs that have won the cup have had as low as 5-6-7 players only that were drafted by that particular team. Too many intangibles to say that drafting is the main focus. |

Bowser and Pettersson?
I'd include Bo in there for the most part. He has been playing well and stepping up for the most part in his role. I think he wants that 'C' badly but my bet the team is waiting to give it to Petterrsson. |

I believe drafting gives you a leg up but there is a fair amount of luck involved also. |

Bo and Pettersson. Boeser has not played like a top 6 player yet this year.

Ya true but I would include Boeser as a top 6 guy...I think he'll come around. Especially after Pettersson gets rolling again. Too bad that shot by Pettersson didn't go in off the crossbar last night. |

Boeser could have a sophomore slump . It would actually be a very good thing in a contract year. Hearing 7-8 mil for him made me cringe. I would like to see him right around what Bo makes. An off year would also help towards the high draft pick. |

Strictly by scoring rates from my chart from last season at PPG rates.
Pettersson scoring at a top rate.
Horvat bottom of a first line player.
Boeser and Baertschi scoring as mid range 2nd line players.
Problem is outside of those 4 for forwards, no one is scoring above a bottom 3rd line player.
Leipsic, Sutter, Virtanen, Eriksson. 3rd liners
The rest of the forwards are scoring at a 4th liner rate. |

Read somewhere he was "ramping it up" a day or so ago. Nevermind
Hearing Thatcher Demko (concussion) saw a specialist and seems to be doing better. Could be ramping it up in the next 10 days. #Canucks
Found it. Could be not "is". Oh well call up Bachman. |

IMO just my thoughts I don't view Baertchi as a top 6 player. Only reason he could be considered top 6 is the fact that he really has only played on non-playoff teams. His current #'s for any top 20 club parks him as a career third liner. Never played over 70 games per season and never broke 40 pts and probably never will. To me that is solid third line material. |
