I think he came to the realization, Benning, that what he was doing wasn't working. They need to do a complete rebuild via drafting because trying to augment the group he inherited by wasting valuable picks on guys like Gudbranson, Baertschi, Sutter or free agent signings like Eriksson, Gagner or MDZ hasn't helped them be competitive at all.

i wouldn't be surprised at all if someone else is running the ship by the draft this year. All JB has done is draft well, and even then you only have like 3 or 4 of his first rounders to base that on.

FA is the defacto president right now and the rumour was that Benning's extension was a 1 year plus option year. I think all that Pronger/Lombardi smoke last year was more serious than people gave it credit. Seemed like the only real hurdle for Lombardi was that late July was like 2-3 months after his exit clause closed.

Agree to disagree, but, you're right that Hextall has failed miserably to add to the group he inherited. Some, if not all, of his UFA signings have been terrible.

He didn't really have anything to bargain with, thanks to Holmgren, for the first few years, however, he does now. But he still won't sacrifice the future for the present.

I've said this multiple times yesterday and today, when I compare the two, I'm simply comparing how the dealt with the draft and building from it.

I understand what you have been trying to say, I just don't think you take into account the dynamics of the 2 teams and the different mandate that the 2 were given.
Both have done a decent job acquiring quality prospects, other than that both have been crap.

I didn't mind the Harry Potter movies.

Hextall inherited a bunch of really good players in their mid 20's, Benning inherited a bunch of over the hill guys in their early 30's. I fully understand that. Hextall just simply wouldn't sacrifice the future to augment the group he inherited because they won't be his legacy just like the twins won't be Bennings.

Benning, on the other hand, did sacrifice a bit of future assets to try and make his older group remain competitive. Which was wrong, imo.

Flyers have made the playoffs two of Hextall's four years, I just don't think he believes enough in them to sacrifice the future for them, and I think he's probably right.

wouldn't surprise me one bit if they have another bad year and the expensive vets continue to suck ass. if guys like Beagle and Roussel and Guddy don't put up its going to look real bad for jimbo if the single positive on the year is Pettersson.

the old ass roster Benning inherited still returned some real good assets. a first, couple former high picks, handful of seconds, some later round picks, couple young roster players.

its just a shame that a bunch of those assets got spent Gudbranson, Sutter and Vey clones. The best non-draft addition to this team in 5 years of Benning has been Baertschi.

there's no way to call those first 3 years after the Calgary loss a rebuild considering what got sent away

Beagle and Sutter are both good PK guys but you don't need them both on the same team, Sutter has value around the league, according to Botchford, so trade him for a good pick and be done with it.

Still depends on the development of the prospects. If Gaudette continues to improve, I don't see Sutter staying. I doubt Van is going to get much help on the wing from prospects next season. Maybe Sutter goes to the wing and is center insurance for when the injuries pile up.

You originally used the word mandate, which is a directive given by a superior, yet you are discussing what you believe to be the vision of these 2 Gm's.
Both have done a pretty crappy overall job of running their teams.

Is there anything on the wing worth of note beyond Dahlen and Lind?

I'm racking my brain but guys like Palmu and Jasek are scratch tickets. Even Lockwood is miles and miles away.

I honestly don't know anyone under the age of 30 who is a diehard MLB fan, just some friends that are casual Jays fans(and that's only because they used to play softball/baseball).

NHL, NFL and NBA fans for sure.

- Nucker101

That's because you are in Canada. I've been to over a half dozen MLB games in the past 3 years LA, SEA, SF, HOU and a few others and there are thousands of fans under 30 that are die hards. Lots of them down there.

Weird. So if we move Sutter at TDL like many want and Beagle goes down with injury again who kills the PP's?

With Beagle out we are already seeing a lapse in defence.

Sutter is a good 3LC that will get you 15 goals and can kill PP's and Beagle is a solid 4th line guy who is a proven champion. Maybe I'm missing something but why not have them both on the same club?
