Maybe these guys should "earn" their generational label? McDavid is amazing - as generational as they come - but he was still an RFA for 4 more years coming out of his ELC. So was Eichel, and he put up nowhere near the numbers of McD and really should have been signed to something in the 3 or 4 year range for around $6M per because he hadn't proved anything. Don't get me wrong, pay for potential, but let's be reasonable here. Don't even get me started on Draisaitl. That GROSS over payment with term is exactly what the Nylander camp is pointing to right now as the hold-up.

I won’t argue that being called a generational talent should be earned....it’s not my fault that media and fans are the ones that blow these guys up before they even play a game.....don’t get me started on this current structure of contracts....as I said in the last blog enjoy the hockey while it’s here because a strike is coming and the players know it based on these “lock out proof” contracts.....it’s ridiculous at best....Leafs are going to do the exact same as we did with Matthews and his 11-12 mil that he ends up getting

Agreed. UFA's with 61 points can sniff $8M+ (MAYBE), not RFA's, or at least RFA's coming off their ELC without bridging.

EDIT: Even then a guy like Phil got $8M x 8 for a couple 80+ point seasons.
