I don't think that is all of it but it's a big part of it. I've made the statement many times that the Flyers wouldn't have made the playoffs last season without Filppula. His role was a part of Couturier blossoming offensively. Filppula got ripped by many but he took on a lot of heavy lifting so others didn't have to. They're having to do things differently now. Think about it, you're the home coach playing Florida, wouldn't you try to get the Couturier line away from the Barkov line? Both in terms of Barkov's defensive two way ability as well as having to defend against that line. They don't have a choice though. Patrick is not really ready for that. Weal can't do it and you don't want your 4th line playing that much. A big part of it is also Provorov and Gostisbehere aren't playing as well as they can. - MJL
I always felt that filpulla was more valuable than any fancy numbers would suggest. I’m not going to say that I miss him. I was glad to get a look at Vorobyev and I don’t think it’s the last we’ll see from him. To me the flyers were shielding the 2nd line last year. Now theyre shielding the 3rd line. I don’t see anything to do about it this year. I’m not for trading for a band aid 3C this year. But I am for finding a solution this summer. I think and hope one of Vorobyev or rubstov can fill the role. But if they don’t feel they can trust them then by all means sign a ufa 3C to a short term deal.

I don't see JvR and Simmonds as the best choices as wingers for a line to match up against other teams top lines.
It comes down to this. The best way to play is to attack rather than defend. The more you can attack versus defend, the better you'll be as a team. The best unit the Flyers can put on the ice to attack is the Couturier line with Provorov and Gostisbehere.
You look at defenseman such as Duncan Keith, winning Norris trophies and Cups. Keith wasn't taking all the heavy lifting. Hjalmarsson was. Freed Keith up to attack. Same with San Jose. Vlasic takes a lot of heavy lifting while Burns attacks.
Really good teams and players can still carry their share of the play while playing against top lines. Such as the Bergeron line in Boston. Those players are special.
Even while Filppula was taking on the role, they marginalized keeping the puck out of the net but they were on the negative side of the possession game. Harder to win that way.
Flyers last went to finals they had a pairing of Pronger and Carle who were dominant at 5 on 5. They controlled the puck and the game the entire time. Another pairing was Timonen and Coburn.
The best thing the Flyers can do to get better is attack more with their skill players and get more players who can attack. That's Provorov and Gostisbehere on the back end. The more they have to spend defending, the less effective they'll be. - MJL
Thing is I think Provorov is better at defense than offense. At least prior to this year. He’s a mess right now. Maybe it’s injury related I don’t know what his problem is. But Provorov is a guy I want going against top lines of other teams. Don’t need him on the attack. Sanheim and ghost can do that. Myers too in the future |

For the record, I absolutely hate Scott Stevens as much as any hockey player. Part of my childhood died because of him in 2000.
But man oh man, I'd kill to have a guy like him on the Flyers right now. Much like Pronger, he was a guy who wouldn't let you off the hook, and he didn't have to do more than look at you to let you know it. - jmatchett383

Provorov scored 17 goals and was in the top 10 in ES scoring among NHL defenseman last season. We don't need him on the attack? Need to reassess that opinion. It is imperative that the Flyers get Provorov on the attack. He is not a stay at home defensive defenseman. Offense is a 5 man attack. Can't do it with just forwards. |

As good as he was. Sanheim and Myers could be pretty comparable offensively. Provorov when he is on his game is a cut above as a two way defenseman.

This is what I was trying to get across before about our strengths, identity and how the team is built. We need to be a puck possession nightmare for other teams. Faceoffs have been good for this so far, but we need to be lighting up other teams. Offense including the PP has to be on. We need to work to take less penalties and minimize defensive errors. Offense is key for success.

The only thing worse than watching the Sixers lose last night is listening to people poop on this trade after one game. |

Warning for Everyone in the Philly area: the roads are extremely slippery. It may not look bad, but this is about the worst I’ve seen the roads. Complete gridlock, accidents, cars unable to get up hills in my area (burbs just outside of chestnut hill). |
