Nylander and Brown for Hamilton. |

Okay, so say they settle at $7 per.
He has that long term cap hit of $6.6 per.
If we assume the cap goes up to, say, $83 Million next year, that leaves the leafs with $27.1 in space to sign:
Matthews
Marner
Kapanen
Moore
Leivo
Johnsson
Ozhiganov
Sparks
And probably a defenseman or two.
You better hope they have a way of clearing Marleau's cap hit, Because two of those guys are probably eating about $18 million. - BINGO!
There would be some juggling ....but none of those guys under Kapanen are of any concern. All replaceable minimum wage parts. If Marleau can vanish next summer the world is good. If not, and they want to keep AM, JT, WN, and MM up front it'll mean Rielly will be playing with a Hainsey's older brother. |

I think that Matthews, Marner, Kapanen & maybe Ozhiganov are the only ones on that list that as of today would be able to ask for significant raises from what they are earning. I don't feel like it is going to be that monumental of a task. |

Sure, but I mean those are just RFA's.
If you can find a way to get rid of Marleau's contract, and sign Matthews/Marner for $18 mill combined, you're left with a little over $15 million to fill 9 or 10 roster spots. if you're carrying 22 or 23 players. |

If the Leafs top pair was H. Lindholm and Doughty, you'd learn to like it. - Unholy_Goalie
I’ve watched quite a few kings games and I’m not that impressed with drew doughty. You like him be the makes 11million? What is it that you actually like about him? Can you explain? |

Forgetting they can put Hortons 5.3MM cap hit on LTIR. He's just on the IR right now and currently counting against the cap, they just haven't needed that extra space the past two years. So that adds an extra 5.3mm of room. |

Fair point. I did miss that.
Still gives you 20.5 Mill across 9~ roster spots. |

And those 9 roster spots are 3rd/4th liners, bottom pairing D, back-up goalie; depth players who can all make 2 or less per year and easily replaceable. |

So far, nobody has offered up a rebuttal to my plan to have the Leafs and Marleau mutually agree to a contract termination on July 2, 2019.
He walks with $3 million in his pocket, leaving only $1.25 million.
No cap hit for the 2019-20 season.
If it was good for Plekanec and the Habs, it's good for us. |

Gardiner is going to be tricky to replace unless Liljegren can make the jump. |

Ya still tough but a little more palatable. I think they're in better shape with the cap than most people realize. Gardiner might not get a new deal and that's a tough one to replace but if he's the only one that's gone, it's not a bad summer.

In theory, Dermott replaces him. It won't be quick and may not happen at all but that's the guy who they'd hope can replace him. Liljegren will be lucky if he's even in the NHL full time, much less playing Gardiner's minutes.
That being said, the cap will probably go up at least another 2 million (that's approximately the average) and they'll be able to re-sign Gardiner as long as he doesn't want more than 6 AAV. |

The Kings suck but Doughty, at 29, will continue being an elite all around defender. Most elite level defenders don't fall off a cliff at 30. History shows elite level defenders being very, very effective well past 30. |

For nine more years?
And past history of defencemen is no guarantee. The league is younger and faster than it has ever been.
If Chelios was alive today, he wouldn't be playing in the NHL. |

We are talking about William Nylander and his type of player does not come around that often. We drafted him 8th overall which means leafs as a team were atrocious the year before thus allowing us to snag him for 8th overall. I’m not interested in doughty or Hamilton or karlson older players and giving up the farm to get them.
Did Dubas tell you he is going to trade Willy. Everyone on this site is becoming insane. You want to give up nylander and brown now also for Hamilton? Insanity |

Keith, at 35, is still going. Lidstrom went until he was 42. Niedermayer went late into his 30s and still at a high level. Chara still playing at 41.
It depends on the game the player plays and there's nothing to suggest Doughty can't be effective for 9 more years given his hockey IQ and his talents. |
