I have seen a few proposals regarding Malkin and I understand that it's more for fun than anything else, but if I was considering a major trade it would be at a position where we need more help. Most proposals I've seen had Okposo going back which would only leave us even weaker at RW. I would look to Chicago and trade for Kane more so than trading for Malkin. Sure the contract is $1m more for one more season, but it is more of a position of need and Kane is 2 years younger. Kane for 5 years at $10.5m >>>>>Okposo $6m for 5 more years.

To Buffalo:
Kane
Luc Snuggerud, (23 y/o dman from Minnesota. Dave's nephew)

To Chicago:
Okposo
Nylander
Guhle
St Louis 1st
San Jose 1st

Teams that spend roughly 35-40% of their cap on 3 forwards(2 of them wingers) typically don't compete for Stanley cups.

Now this is a deal that I could certainly embrace.
I would love to see P.Kane in a Sabres sweater.

Caps had Ovie, Backstrom and Kuz at $24m. At 33, 30 and 26 y/o

Sign Skinner for $8.5m and we could have Jack, Skinner and Kane for $29m at 30, 26 and 22 y/o.

So $5m more with a higher cap with a lower average age.

Typically, not 100%

That's two centres*. Caps winning last year was somewhat of a surprise. Historically speaking, tying up that much money with 2 wingers/3 forwards doesn't go well..

It'll likely never happen anyways but I understand the appeal of getting the hometown guy on the team. There's just so many better ways to address depth at wing.

Edit: surprise in the sense that their team was far from a contender going into the post season last year. If anything their best shot was the year before.

He’s a career 12.5% shooter.

Taking away his empty netter he has 1 goal on 22 shots.

He in reality should have 3 or 4 goals and be on pace for 12-15 in a 4th line role.

He needs to produce more but he’s been unlucky this year

U can’t possibly be happy with his play,
regardless of “bad luck”

Eichel and Malkin would be $20m to Toronto's probably $24m+ for JT and Matthews, just saying

this is a good take, but he seems like he's having trouble keeping up with this team (very strange to type that)

Still doesn’t make sense to me that Botts traded for players that have average speed at best,
when he kept saying last year that we needed to get faster

I think he’s been very good defensively.

That 4th line as a whole has been

- sbroads24

It was playing well before Berglund was put on it too though

And did we really bring him here to be a 4th liner?

I really can’t see how anyone wouldn’t wanna get rid of him (bc of the contract)

Ror was an unwanted slug.

Teams were not lining up for a quitter.

I just dont see where Malkin fits. Sure it sounds cool but you're asking for cap hell at that point.

We would end up having to trade players we cant afford to give contracts to from a desperate position (a la Chicago).

Malkin is a hall of Famer.

1/2 of eichel and malkin?

Jbotts will use the money he saved by wisely letting EK9 go.

Skins looks great, his career numbers do not support 8.5-9 million.

Kane again, can any of your posts not contain anything about Kane.

Fine... but why trade for players who are the opposite of what Botts said he wanted?

Was he really just schooled that badly by a seasoned GM?

Better than adding a proven star and playoff performer?

I'll totally disagree with you.

If Risto and Okposo went the other way, our situation would be unchanged from a cap perspective for the length of Malkin's contract. That why the Oleksiak/Malkin, Risto/Okposo deal works. Its $11.5 out, $11.5 in.

Malkin has 4 years left, Oleksiak 3

Risto has 4, Okposo has 5

The picks would be the key, obviously.

None of this is gonna happen obviously, but it wouldnt have to crush our cap

It's just as likely that 3 years from now we have two decent players in Tage and that 1st rounder while STL is paying 7.5M for a 55pt 2nd line center. Don't call bust too early is all I'm saying.

I think bergland was clearly a salary offset.

The fact that he's a veteran Swede may have been appealing. We do have dahlin and some other young swedes.

Ror was difficult to move

I didn't say don't add a star or don't add a playoff performer. I said there are better ways to do it then emptying the cupboards for a 30 year old winger making 10.5 million a year.

you can either believe that Botterill, a guy instrumental in helping the pens win back to back cups and someone with a proven track record of getting good value, got schooled hard cause he was blackout drunk when he made this trade. Or, it is ever so slightly possible that he was desperate to get ROR out cause it wasn't working with him on this team. It's your call.

Veteran placeholders allowing Nylander, Olofsson, Smith, Malone and company to develop on the farm. Sobotka, Berglund have seen their share fair of defensive zone starts and play the right away. Might not show up on the score sheet as much as we like but we are 13-6-2 last time I checked. Thompson and that first rounder were the keys to the trade. Thompson still has time to get his poop together and that first rounder might very well be the best player in the trade (including ROR) when it’s all said and done.
