The Flyers aren't getting close to NHL caliber goaltending. That's what is killing the team right now. They're hardly perfect in other aspects of the game, but the puck stopping is so bad right now it just has to be addressed.

Granted I'm basing this opinion off of one game, but your team gave up 100 scoring chances and odd-man rushes last night.

Goaltending was not the only problem.

I'm not going to say the team hasn't rolled over at times including last night, but the goaltending is atrocious. There has been a lot of criticism of Flyers goaltending over a lot of years but that was generally that the level was not elite . . . not good enough to win them the cup. What we've seen this year is literally not to the very bottom of NHL standards.

Coaches make a HUGE difference and I think the Pens are prime example of this. Sid and Geno have pretty much been the best players in the game for most of their careers, but played on grossly underachieving teams. It's not like Sid and Geno were playing bad hockey, so this idea of being unable to coach highly skilled players is wrong.

All players can be coached to play a system that works for the team as a whole. It takes a good coach to recognize the abilities and strengths of his players, their styles and build a system that plays to those strengths.

There are sometimes exceptions where they surrounded everyone with the right players, they clicked and ran with it, but overall good coaching keeps a team going longer than good players catching lightning in a bottle.

When should you fire a coach? When management can realize when the players do not respond to the coach. In that instance you either retool to get players you know the coach can work with or get rid of the coach and get one who can command the room.

Yes but all those came after it was 3 or 4 nothing. At that point they are taking risks to try and get back into the game

How does giroux stop 3 awful five hole goals? Your boas against Giroux is ridiculous. Ibthink u are the one that needs to look in the mirror.

Girouxs line is the only one that had consistent pressure and scoring chances

- xShoot4WarAmpsx

I didn't say Giroux would stop the goals or even that he was primarily responsible for the goals. I said he coasted back defensively. Watch the replays. It's clear. It's not a bias. It's just facts. The offense does not excuse a player from giving maximum effort away from the puck.

I think they gave up at least 4 breakaways last night and at least 2 2 on 1's.

The Leafs second goal was a clear cut breakaway. More odd man rushes were the result of poor puck management than due to taking risks. The Flyers were a turnover machine in the game from the opening puck drop.

1st goal Johnsson stepped around the defenceman.

2nd goal Johnsson blew by 2 defenders like they were standing still for 1-0 breakaway.

3rd goal was a rush where defenders couldn't match speed, Flyers defenceman couldn't clear, puck was laying around in front, Flyers defender impedes his own goalie, Marleau dumps puck in empty net.

Fourth goal was an embarrassins strip, but other d-man was just as much to blame for starting to exit zone.

And those are just the goals - there were plenty of other chances.

The Marleau goal, the 3rd goal, the clear right into the middle of the ice was by Konecny, not a defenseman. Just a stupid play.

When they cut to the Philly bench last week during the Sabres 1st period rout of the flyers, I said "Hakstol looks like he's waiting for the axe to fall" & the players looked demoralized(way more than just from that period). Things haven't improved much since then for them.

Clearly time to make a move, just try to get Quenneville then Mclellan or maybe A.V...

Disagree with Ek that coaches are responsible for teams coming out flat....that's usually on the players. However, they are responsible for in game adjustments, ice time & matchups that can play a huge role in a league with so much parity. Also the general team culture seems to be a combo of coach and players...

But goaltending...when was the last coach to be fired when his goalie was playing lights out?

As a fan I've got to say part of the team being "family" kind of left with Snider. He was always there, Cheering and Watching the game along with us, You could see him in the box at the games or random shots on TV and he was always a fan as much as an owner, Jumping out of his seat with the rest of us........Maybe its just mental but that end of things seems to have left the building.

Goaltending sucked, coaching sucked, team leadership sucked, general player performance sucked. Blame what you want, but changes are needed. If no changes to players or coaching are made by Christmas, the change needs to be Hextall.
