someone desperate to be a GM and needs a gig? i'm sure someone could find a reason to say yes. not the candidate you'd want though.
common sense says, hak et al are out once they get a new GM. and if the coaching buagaboo was the real issue with ownership, a hextall hire, they probably weren't comfy with him finding a replacement. - hammarby31
Or he was asked about a replacement and wanted to go internal. Knob, Gordon.
Still can’t (frank)ing believe it. Holy poop boys. |

Well good bye all our promissing prospect. Im sure Homer will somehow find a way to get Chia from Edmonton to help destroy this fanchise too. I really think Hextall would have had the team where it needed to be by next season.
What got hextall fired was his over reliance on his prospects. We dont need a 3 C we need a 2nd C. Patrick needs more time to develop. Patrick and Lindblom should be on the 3rd line with Simmonds until they develop consistency in their games. We usually allow the first goal of the game becuse we arent scoring many goals. We need more production from our 2nd unit. In reality we are a one line team. |

It's shocking to me. I can't say its the right move. Really the only major thing that can be hung on Hextall is the goaltending situation. What does this signify? Does it mean we go back to wheeling and dealing? It tells me that the upper brass will not accept nor have the patience for the draft and develop approach that Hextall hung his hat on. - MJL
Lets face it, the Flyers are in the entertainment business and this has not been an entertaining product for a long time and has just gotten more boring (for most fans) since Hextall's arrival. I don't think this move necessary means a return to the old balls-out Flyers approach management. This organization needed a swift kick to the balls and it just got one. I'm for whatever makes this a more exciting team. |

i agree it would have been dumb. it's absurd that hakstol is still coaching here. aside from asset collection and cap relief, hextall has done very little else to improve the team. you could argue he's hurt the team just as much with some bad signings and failure to address the goalies - which includes shipping mason out, which imho, was a huge mistake.
at this point, it doens't matter. what matters is that the coaches are next. and then start to address player issues. - hammarby31
I think the fact that Mason also faltered after leaving here and is no longer in the league, signifies that it wasn't a mistake. The problem was that put them into a bind in having to re-sign Neuvirth.

The current staff are dead men walking. They just didn't get the axe because the new guy is choosing his own staff which needs time. - dragonoffrost
I agree. I wonder who the candidates for GM are. I'm not sure who is available, but I want someone with zero past history with the Flyers. Enough of hiring former players. It doesn't work. Quenneville as coach would be a great start. |

My initial reaction, subject to change is that this is a panic move and a signal that the team management wants to go back to trying to contend every year and wheeling and dealing. I hope that reaction is wrong. - MJL
Now that Im past the initial excitement of it and reality is setting in Im starting to have the same concern develop.
Im just waiting for the inevitable "Provy traded for a 31 year old center to help the team this year" deal to go down. |

How do you increase the entertainment factor? By continuing to draft and develop or by doing something else?

Difference between the two franchises. As long as any of the old guard is left, they're not gonna tolerate being embarrassed like they were Wednesday and Saturday
They're just not. As long as there are old-schoolers in that organization, they will have enough pride to not swallow getting embarrassed

I agree. We will see. That loss in Toronto on HNIC was the final straw. 5 goaltenders in 23 games is laughable. I'm sure ownership was pretty embarrassed by that game. |

I disagree with the sentiment that the philosophy of the team will change to "win now" or "make the playoffs now". That's jumping several steps ahead. Let's see who the new GM hire is, who he might bring in as coach, and what he does with the roster before crying that the sky is falling. |

holmgren can easily steer the ship the rest of the season. it's not like he doesn't have the experience. if that happens...how long until he hires a coach?
it's possible he takes interim tag, finds his coach, and then finds a gm. |

Exactly. They have never accepted being embarrassed. Not in the decades all of us have watched them. They have never accepted being embarrassed like they were last week

I don’t think this, but we have to wait and see. To be fair, a few trades would be in order.

By all accounts, Hextall and his staff drafted well. We know he improved the Cap position of the team. We know they have one of the highest rated farm systems in the league. What could the philosophical difference be? I have a hard time believing that Hextall stood on a hill of refusing to fire the coach and have it wind up costing him his job.

Hopefully they bring in a GM who builds through draft, trade, signings, etc.. We'll see.

So the new GM comes in with a mandate to make some trades. Always works out well. Seems familiar.

I’m going to low key call it.
If he had fired Hakstol he still would have his job. He basically dug in and got blown up.
If that’s really what it came down to, good riddance. I am in favour of a draft and develop plan but you need to be analytical of your own decisions. He started to smell of a guy that was far too loyal/arrogant.
Sucks, because I really hoped for better from him. |
