Whatever age is just a construct. What about him? He seemed promising - bulet13
He's a smart guy. Not sure if the Flyers would reach out or not; he's back in London with the Knights

If the goalie situation is the (arguably) biggest narrative for Hexy doing a poor job, I just don’t understand how a new GM will fix this. How many starting goalies have been traded since Ron took over that have also made a positive impact with their new team? I can only think of Roberto Luongo, maybe Ryan Miller? On top of this, which goalies since he took over hit UFA that could have helped this team? - arichardson22
One guy i thought of was James Reimer. i think he was available when elliott was. I thought he played well for some bad toronto teams and was young enough to maybe be a guy that could be a good option.
Well we all wanted a move. We'll see what happens now |

Reimer hasn't looked very good this year when Luongo's been hurt. One of the reasons -- not the only reason, but one of the reasons -- why they're off to a sluggish start

I wonder if Holmgren approached Hextall and gave him an ultimatum on making some sort of organizational change and Hexy declined. |

I thought about this too, and you maybe right or they are just going to hire the GM and let him decide what to do with the coaching staff. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if some or all of the coaching staff is gone upon hiring a new GM if not sooner. - RustyPipes
Any new GM coming in is going to evaluate everything, including the coaches.

I mean they practice patience last year when they lost 10 straight and there weren't changes. Maybe they just felt like it's happening again and didn't agree with waiting it out this time and that it shouldn't be happening again. |

Eh idk about Reimer but if that’s all you can think of, then the point may be made lol. Starting Goalies are in no way easy to come by and I don’t doubt if Ron tried to get one via trade then the trade partner targeted good prospects and Ron wasn’t comfortable doing so. Who knows if that was a good or bad call to hold off but the way our team defense has been for years we’d need a good ass goalie. |

It really is unfortunate that Ron was so loyal to his coaching staff.
I really had higher hopes, but if he was that tied to the hip with what was obviously a poor hire, then Hextall was also the wrong man for the job.
Unfortunate. |

Did they seriously fire Hextall?? |
|
|
|
Not my thought, but listened to one guy who through out the following...
What this firing does is gives the Flyers a leg up headed into the TDL and the offseason to reestablish the culture and team they want...had they gone with the normal mode of firing the coach to get short term gains out of the team and still felt they were going to remove Hexy in the offseason, they would have missed the chance to start reshaping immediately...with a new GM (or Int GM) they can start moving forward now.... |

Is a new GM going to come in and start making moves right away, or is he going to evaluate the team and the coaching staff, which takes time before making a move?

A move I didn’t think would happen because I simply figured Ron would come to his senses.
Hextall brought so much good to this organization but at the end of the day he made his own bed. A blind loyalty to a poor HC that obviously he was approached about letting go. He is still here today as GM if he shows Dave Hakstol the door and I firmly believe that.
We all have a right and probably good reason to be on edge about the next hire for GM, but this now became a necessary evil. For all the good Hextall has done, he decided to die on a hill.
What a stupid (frank)ing hill it was. I expected and hoped for much better, from Hextall. |

Question for those who think this is possibly about Hextall refusing to fire Hakstol. If that's true, and they fired Hextall for not being willing to make a coaching change, why is Hakstol still the coach? |

It depends on who it is. If it's Dean Lombardi I'm guessing he's pretty familiar with things and is ready to hit the ground running. |

Holy crap, did I not see this coming. Honestly, the hiring of Hakstol was a head scratcher from day one. Dave Hakstol didn’t have an impressive pro resume. The signing looked as if it was because he coached Ron’s son Brett. Hakstol kept a guy like Chris Vandevalde in the line up every night, probably because he coached Vandevalde at Notre Dame. All of this was a bad look in my opinion.
While I don’t agree with the decision, it would seem that Dave Hakstol during this time was Ron Hextall’s downfall. |

The biggest question now is do they trade for a goalie right away.
I have no confidence in Elliot alone being the guy with a hurt groin.
Best case scenario is he starts in slightly more then half the remaining games. Worst case is he has a nagging groin issue the rest of the year.
Going with Pickard, Lyon and Stolarz for the rest of the games Eliot doesn’t play means tanking the season, even if Provorov and Ghost get their juju back.
Carter Hart should be no where in the vicinity of this current mess. He’s probably closer to 2-3 years away.
