A move I didn’t think would happen because I simply figured Ron would come to his senses.

Hextall brought so much good to this organization but at the end of the day he made his own bed. A blind loyalty to a poor HC that obviously he was approached about letting go. He is still here today as GM if he shows Dave Hakstol the door and I firmly believe that.

We all have a right and probably good reason to be on edge about the next hire for GM, but this now became a necessary evil. For all the good Hextall has done, he decided to die on a hill.

What a stupid (frank)ing hill it was. I expected and hoped for much better, from Hextall.

You're talking about it as if it's a fact that's why Hextall was fired. We don't know that.

Look. A guy like Rutherford was thought to be a moron and turned into quite a solid guy for the Penguins.

We shall see what happens here. This obviously now becomes a season of change, and more moves will obviously come.

I just really grew disappointed in Hextall. This didn’t need to happen, and he did it to himself. Let’s see who the new hire is.

I'm just hoping that the new GM doesn't get all tradey with all the prospects. Trading Jake, Simmonds and or mid tier prospects fine but I'm seeing traded prospects becoming very good to star level players.

Question for those who think this is possibly about Hextall refusing to fire Hakstol. If that's true, and they fired Hextall for not being willing to make a coaching change, why is Hakstol still the coach?
- MJL

No idea. That’s the ultimate fear. A rabbit hole I don’t want to run down.

Just my guess, but they won’t let him go until a new HC is found - and they didn’t want to go internal. Something I would agree with.

So the GM can pick his guy?

I think the blame does, in the end, fall more on the GM, he gets the coach the team and there is only so much the coach can do.

We could hear another firing today or before the press conf tomorrow. But my guess is they will ask whoever they hire if they want to stick with Haks or start fresh. Or as someone maybe jokingly suggested; maybe Haks did ask Hexy to get this or that player and didn’t because he didn’t want to lose assets.

Great contract, size/strength, now an easily projectable 60-70 two-way center

People can laugh at some of the weaknesses that he has, but I am totally serious when I say this: He's one of the 10 best 1Cs in the league

1. McDavid
2. Crosby/Malkin
3. MacKinnon
4. Bergeron
5. Seguin
6. Matthews/Tavares
7. Kuznetsov
8. Scheifle
9. Kopitar
10. Couturier

- AllInForFlyers

I dunno..I take Stamkos and Barkov well before Coots.
I would say to me Coots is 100% a top 20 center. Hell if you are honest about your list you have 12 players listed with Stamkos not being one of them.

Take this for what it’s worth.

From HFboards but Boruk was apparently mentioning that Hextall wanted full control, and was fired for not following through on a few “suggested” changes.

Prongers name thrown out there along with Briere.

Again, consider the source.

My initial reaction, subject to change is that this is a panic move and a signal that the team management wants to go back to trying to contend every year and wheeling and dealing. I hope that reaction is wrong.
- MJL

The situation is reminiscent of the Ed Wade tenure with Phillies. Wade and Arbuckle developed a prospect base but couldn’t get over the hump. Gillick was hired and moved on from several veterans. The following year they began their run. Hopefully something similar will unfold for the orange and black.

Ask this question in 2 to 7 days.

I don’t think anyone questioned Hextall’s decision making more then myself. Outside of JvR, his signings and overall offseason transitions were underwhelming. He preached patience with the the prospects. I personally felt Myers deserved a roster spot right out of camp. As well as believed Morin deserved a shot one year ago and played a much better game than Sanheim out of the 2017 camp.

I think slow decision making and “patience” is why Hextall is unemployed. I don’t like it but I get it.

Disappointed is a solid word. I really thought Ron would be that guy.

His failure to address the goaltending, PK and HC positions did him in. That’s my take anyway.

Is a new GM going to come in and start making moves right away, or is he going to evaluate the team and the coaching staff, which takes time before making a move?
- MJL

Unless it is an internal hire my feeling would be that this is the window to evaluate prior to the TDL...Not throwing parts off the ship from the start, but therre is a strong feeling of uncertainty...and i tell you what, if we feel it as fans, i can only image the locker room after practice...

that's exactly why, i would think. and if hextall finally did fired hak under protest, do you think they'd trust him to find his replacement? you also can't fire both at the same time. i mean, you could, but that would be REALLY dumb.
