Depending on the new GM, which is going to make a big difference, Hakstol will most likely finish the year and be let go in the offseason. Unless that coach they really want accepts to come aboard this year, which is unlikely. They don't want to replace a body for the sake of replacing now. They want the RIGHT people.
- Glak18

I think it makes sense that the new GM will evaluate and make decisions from there. Most GM's want their own people in.

LOL you think the guy playing Weise on the 2nd line isn't part of the problem?
- YuenglingJagr

Hak is done. He may stay on to the end of the year even but he’s a dead man walking at this point.

Someone one mentioned it but could there have been a disconnect between hackstoll and Hextall? Maybe Hackstol wanted to push this thing forward. Waive guys like Weise and Lehtara but Hextall said no, let our guys in the AHL?

Maybe he asked for a reliable goalie and Hextall said no, we are waiting on Hart.

All any of us can do is speculate.

As good as Hextall did for the Flyers he also wasn't immune to some glaring issues.

So Hakstol won a power struggle between him and Hextall?

Yeah, that is well down the list of my worries right now. I am really lost as to why he is still here tbh, but whatever. Making sense of what is going on right now isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Hextall got fired for EVERYTHING, not just the coaching staff. The questioning of having the right players and moves, lack thereof, to improve the team as well.
- Glak18

Goaltending.
PK.
Coaching.

The big 3 imo. He had chances to address them. He did not, or refused to.

The next guy could very well be worse, and yes that is the real risk here - but I am more disappointed in Hextall than anything else. This did not need to happen. He did it to himself.

Question for those who think this is possibly about Hextall refusing to fire Hakstol. If that's true, and they fired Hextall for not being willing to make a coaching change, why is Hakstol still the coach?
- MJL

Yup - if he's not fired in fairly short order and replaced with an interim coach (because the new GM will surely want his own guy) then I'm going to seriously doubt this was the issue.

WTF is happening.
- Tomahawk

It's all the things, man -- 10-11-2, $35 large for JVR and out of the playoffs at Thanksgiving, fan apathy and STH not renewing, tickets going for $10 on the resale market, five goalies and all have been strafed at some point, absolutely blown out on national television twice in one week, PK ridiculous for years

I don't know what I would have done to address all of that first. But one thing I do know, after working in the corporate world, is that you don't get to do nothing

I think Ron Hextall is to be commended for cleaning up the cap and replenishing prospects. Absolutely deserves credit for that. He drafted reasonably well, too

But at the same time, read that first paragraph. We all work for somebody, man. You can't survive all of that poop for long when you aren't winning

Agreed that it was likely about a lot of things and not about a refusal to fire the coach.

My only thing is this.

What would the point be of replacing Hak with a guy like Lappy, Knob or Gordon - when in reality all seem to be very questionable.

What's stopping him from creating a new account? I don't see how a ban would work

A lot of fear and rightfully so, but let’s for a second day dream.

Doubt it, but imagine if it’s Q and Yzerman.

When you think about it, one of Hextall or Hakstol was going. Last year everyone wanted a change when they were going through the 10 game losing streak. Hextall got his wish and everyone was patient. Hextall said it was on the players to get through it.

This year you kind of have the same issues. This time I think they wanted something to change and Hextall probably was preaching patience again.

I just think they organization was expecting more after being patient through some tough stretches and hoped hextall had figured it out.

Yep. If you make a legit threat to one's safety in real life and know where to find that person, you can and will be banned.

You have to remember just because a GM wants or needs a player doesn't mean other teams are willing to let go of said player(s). It's a two-way street. Some GMs have more clout than others or deal with others a bit more due to relationship. That is why you see a lot of deals involving the same teams. Example: Chicago and Arizona JUST made another move.

This move says to me that they felt that the GM did not give the coach the right players to work with and they didn't like the path the team was on. They also likely had a difference in philosophy on what to do in the immediate future to better the team.

Just lots of talk on the trade if the 2 1st rounders would eventually be worth the loss of scoring Schenn provided...lots of debate on the subject...but I think his main point was that the players that were brought in to replace Schenn in no way replaced hisscoring, everyone else around them had to score more to cover for his loss...
