Meltzer.

“If the ONLY or even the primary issue between Homer and Hexy was about the head and/or assistant coaches, I think Homer would have ridden it out for the season. There were clearly other big picture things about the direction of the roster plan, including youth development plan.”

A little surprised at this but something had to be done. Hak can't be here much longer, they should have just fired him as well and put in an interim coach. Clearly the new GM will bring in a coach.

I'd think Hextall held onto Hak too long as well as not addressing the goalie need over the summer. Who knows Holmgren might have been after Hextall to do many things to try to turn things around and he flat out refused.

I would have thought Hak would be first to go, so there might be some really big issues going on here.

I really think the "philosophical differences" thing is just some words to use without being specific. It's the "lower body injury" of firing reasons in the NHL.

I think there is an overwhelming accumulation of issues that in order to address would require Hextall to waiver from his more patient approach to growth and player accountability that he didn't want to do. Perhaps it was suggested that we trade a defense prospect for a more solidifying veteran defenseman but Hextall was reluctant to give up our assets at less than what he saw as premium value. Perhaps suggestions were made regarding the goalie situation or young forwards or changes requested for specific penalty killing type players that were ignored. Who knows the specifics, not me and I never will.

I think the 'mountain' of differences that this could be hyped up to be are really just a number of slightly different views on issues that aren't shaping up and the pressure is real to be a good team if you're watching other teams re-tool and flip faster in flashy and exciting ways

Chuck Fletcher and Ron Francis among the early names as potential GM’s in Philly. Both experienced men. Francis is in the process of divesting equity in Carolina.

Pierre LeBrun
@PierreVLeBrun
Carolina hasn’t been asked yet by Philadelphia for permission to talk to Francis but obviously this is early in the process

And slow starts would not be tolerated.... He'd be in the locker room at first intermission throwing things
- dragonoffrost

I know that Promger had stated that he was interested in a teams front office. Not sure what kind of GM he would be but there are worse choices.

Edit: Since he is working with Tallon from Florida he has been getting experience so not a total reach.

And did they? I think they did increase their overall goal scored last year.

But overall, everyone knew that it was a move geared towards the future.

- jmatchett383

Yes, the difference was within 5-10 goals I think...and yes...it was a move towards the future... didn't say I was arguing any of those points...but there was lots of discussion on the topic...I think when Coots and G had career years (after really bad previous seasons) they hid the lack of scoring from other players that were supposed to at least contribute...as constructed this is really a 1 to 2 line team on most nights...still not being able to roll 3 lines hurts...and the GM did not fix that problem.

It could be very possible that Faceless Man was Scott (Comcast) who made some personnel suggestions amd Hexy was overly dismissive. Not suggesting disrespectful but I could very much see the "you aren't a hockey guy" tone.

fast forward to a couple sessions of that and then the turd Toronto game and maybe that did it.

Not sure it had to be "I wont fire Hak"....could have been puffing up to the boss of your boss.

I don't believe for one second it had to do with disrespect or pride, it's about business. The product is not selling, so give me a product that will or I will find someone else who can.

I have no idea how things will eventually shake out, but at least it’s interesting again.

They badly needed to shake things up, this team was heading straight for a last place finish in the Metro. Hopefully the new GM acquires a goalie and we’ll soon have seen the last of Pickard.

Bingo. I had even said yesterday after the silence that this team has become irrelevant. Especially after the Phillies spend big money this offseason.

The business has suffered greatly.

Maybe Holmgren and Scott thought they would start seeing guys they drafted and developed start to handle certain roles and guys like Weise, Lehtara and Weal would see less time.

Lots of things to speculate about. I hope the guys ask some good questions tomorrow at the presser.

Doesn’t believe the decision was as much about firing Hak but more so about ownership wanting other buttons pushed to improve the on ice product. Mentions Hex wanting to stay patient.

If that is true, time to find new teams. Hold me. Hold me tight.

Never said pride...the appearance of intractable approach and a "i know the best path forward solely" has been the downfall of many would be leaders.

There's a difference between throwing away picks/prospects for quick fixes and making smart trades to fix the on-ice product without mortgaging the future.

Telling any business person, especially the CEO, they don't know as much as you...that is an uppercut to ego. Any CEO will tell you they worked hard to get where they are and they take pride in that.

Again this did not happen anyway.

Agree.

They allowed the patient approach last year at his request. To see it going on again they probably expected some changes only to be told patience again which probably had them thinking that this can't keep happening.

Maybe they see the Leafs throwing a lot of their talented kids in to the fire and letting them grow in the NHL.

It didn't help that he came out this offseason and said they were going to take a big step forward only to see them floundering with the same holes as last year.

So I think our hope has to be that Hextall is the Hinkie of the Flyers minus the full out in your face tanking. He cleaned up the salary cap, drafted well (still to be seen), got us some assets to work with. The Flyers need to skip the Colangelo step and go right to finding the Elton Brand who can make move to make this team competitive without completely cleaning out the asset bin. Maybe we see a Butler type trade in the next year, but right now the Sixers are competing for a top spot in the east while the Flyers are asleep on their skates.

Scary to me as well......

Lets just hope those buttons aren't of the "panic" variety.

The one interesting thing.

If Varsity is coach for any more home losses.

Those “fire Hakstol” chants will be loud.
