I am (frank)ing furious. I am (frank)ing livid. This reeks of the Comcast bean counters pulling the plug on what Hextall started and he wouldnt budge. I have no faith of the hiring of the new GM. The new GM will know that the organeyezation is returning to will now mode and will make moves accordingly. This is the most pessimistic and shattered I have ever been in following the team.....im done - KINGKENZO
Weird. This is the happiest I've been as a fan in years. |

Flyers are going to sign Bobrovsky to a big UFA deal and trade Hart. Bobrovsky will falter and Hart will win the Vezina and become a star for another team. I don't know if I'll die from laughter or from crying. - MJL
I don't think they're gonna trade Hart. They're just not gonna wait for him

I’ll wait and see but am not happy about this move. Hexy was doing a fine job in my opinion. Yes, goalie blah blah blah. But unless he refused to change the coach I see no reason to can him. Many of us said that Hak would be his undoing...I guess we were right? - coffee junkie
This!!
Sorry I’m leight with my two cents, but unless he had severe conflict with Dave Scott or Homer, this move is waaaay over the top at this time. So the real question becomes NOW WHAT???

The Flyers are close to being the worst first period team in the league under Hakstol.
If you cant get your team ready to play at the start of games, you are a bad coach.
No the issue wasn't nearly as bad under Berube. - Feanor
What was the difference in how the coach prepared the team to play against the Rangers, versus the Leafs?

Some of that's on the players, man. I'm not saying the coach is blameless, but they have been like this for a decade now. The last time they actually got after people in the first was under Hitch
I'd have moved some guys. I would've. Because they have been doing this poop for years -- it was a problem all the way back to Stevens
Totally different players and coaches, same problem. And I admit it's bad. It's ridiculous how they start games - AllInForFlyers
Under Berube they were -4 in two seasons.
Under Lavi they were +14.
No comparison to how bad they are under Hak. |

I'm judging his performance at getting them ready to play from the opening puck drop over 269 games, and it's objectively terrible. Just like the PK.
Just like the PK, the issue wasn't fixed from one good game against the Rags. It's persistent and ongoing. |

Is it easy or difficult to look up what they did under Stevens and Hitch?

Interesting enough, you're omitting the players from that equation.
I didn't say it was fixed. Clearly by the context of the question and the obvious difference between the two games.

john boruk was just on nhl radio and he floated chris pronger as a possibility. - hammarby31
Pronger still lives in St Louis and his wife won't move away from there again. In his current gig with Florida he travels only occasionally to be with the team and talks about having to wear Panther gear in SL so people realize he's not with the blues.

i agree it would have been dumb. it's absurd that hakstol is still coaching here. aside from asset collection and cap relief, hextall has done very little else to improve the team. you could argue he's hurt the team just as much with some bad signings and failure to address the goalies - which includes shipping mason out, which imho, was a huge mistake.
at this point, it doens't matter. what matters is that the coaches are next. and then start to address player issues. - hammarby31
Whatever happened between Berube, Reese, Mason, and Hextall was highly questionable. |

He got a 100-point season out of a 30-year-old player by easing him to the wing. - AllInForFlyers
Wasn't it reported that was Hextall's idea? |

Good point. Who knows? Maybe they think Hakstol would be fairing better if he had a steady goalie, 3C, and a stout top 4 Dman? - RustyPipes
You could probably point to several teams that would like to improve on a number of positions on their rosters but make due with what they have because it's not hurting them. With the exception of goaltending, I think the Flyers could make due with what they have. |

This move says to me that the upper brass doesn't think the coaching is the issue. They think the issue is the players the GM gave to the coach to use. - MJL
Or they want to keep the continuity with the coaches and let the new GM decide which direction to go. They may still have hope of saving the season with this group. |

Any new GM is likely going to want to hire his own people. That's normal. This pretty clearly signifies that the brass thinks the issue is with the roster and not the coaching. That's what I see at this point. They wanted Hextall to be more aggressive and he didn't feel that was right. Holmgren's comments today were telling. |
