Let the new GM hire his own coach. By the end of the month.
Hextall being so loyal to such a failure of a head coach is mind boggling. |

i don't agree with this move - nastyflyergirl
Hextall has added some nice talent through the draft. Thank him for that. His blind loyalty and lack of being pro-active cost him his job. I think it's absurd that Holmgren is making this decision though. And I don't trust him hiring a GM/coach.
So, it's possible things can get worse. |

I still can’t believe it.
It’s obvious he was approached about making changes probably multiple times and dug his heels in.
Holy poop guys. |

Great pull.
I forgot about him.
Hire Steve Y and Quenneville.
Does that bring some excitement? |

I did not see this coming. I thought Hexy would have been last man out the door. Wow. This makes me wonder if Hexy was even in conversations with Q or his people about availability? Gutsy move by Holmgren. Most GM's can hold onto their jobs by making a trade or firing coach(es) to buy them time. Hexy stuck to his guns. |

This team was the closest to a cup it's been in years under Holmgren's guidance I don't see an issue with him calling the shots he's a competent hockey mind. |

Watching Johnson skate right past the D on that one goal told me they need Keenan to come in and have a one day "skating" session with the team...run them til they all puke...the effort of this team is mind numbing...
I haven't heard much talk of it, but with Knoblauch onboard, how is he not able to help build a system on the PK with Hak and Lappy...he is also supposed to be one of the rising star coaching assistants that works well with the young guys...but i don't think they all falls on coaching...
It is almost like the coaching staff is stuck until the older guys buy in...I love Jak for what he brings to the offensive side, but he can go if he doesn't ever play team D...
Hexy has to do something before the holiday...unfortunately with Snider gone, no one has the guts to put Hexy on the hot seat as all the other guys have gooned this up themselves... - JW98FlyerFan

They won't. Obviously, I can read: You don't think Homer can get the job done.
I disagree. Yeah, he made moves that didn't work. I don't deny that.
I wasn't crying in 2010 when he took a last-place team to the Cup final -- and he had a goalie that year. Ray Emery got hurt.

Tied his fate to his HC.
I truly liked Hextall’s approach and wonder if we get more news in the coming days.
I liked the patience and focus on drafting but have to wonder if it really was the loyalty to his coaches that got him the can. |

To me this is the right move. This is a major statement by the Flyers. Now they need to make a great GM hire and get this thing moving. On a side note. How amazing is it that they drop this bomb on sports radio and then just go right back to talking about the Eagles. Ha ha ha |

We shall see who they bring in, but I don't like the fact that Holmgren's vision of the team's future won out.
Again, I'll hold judgment until the rest of the dominoes fall. But I don't want to go back to the old ways either. Not with this core. |

No Lombardi. Please not Lombardi. Sure he won two cups but now look at the Kings. They're gonna be trash for years and years to come - bulet13
After years of mediocrity would you trade 2 cups for more years of mediocrity? |

Hak is going to be out also. No way they just let Ron go and kept Hakstol. |

Possible. I didn't like Holmgren as a GM. He was aggressive, but often was reckless trading for bandaids. Perhaps he can make a good hire at GM. And that GM isn't tied to Hakstol at all, so Hakstol is as good as gone. No one would take the GM job without being able to bring his own staff in. |

I wouldn't have necessarily wanted to fire Hakstol, either, but I wouldn't have left myself exposed like Hextall did -- nobody's blind. They all can see you didn't give Hakstol a healthy goalie and 3C, that the PK has been trash for years.
You can't be digging in your heels when you have left the back door open

Wouldnt it be interesting if it comes out that Hak kept asking Hexy to get him this or that and Hexy kept turning him down? |

Arguably the pendulum swung from one extreme to another.
I don’t want panic moves or trading kids for a cup run. That’s the fear here. Curious what happens. It would be a wet dream if it’s Quenville and Yzerman. Doubt that obviously. |

I'll give him credit in that regard I mean he stuck to his plan but patience has never been this organizations motto and the higher ups weren't willing to wait anymore. I can't blame them they probably see what we see a 30 year old Giroux who is still a great player but has had his whole prime wasted essentially waiting for Hextall' s plan to take shape. I'm all for building through the draft and creating cap space and Hextall did a damn good job of that but his lack of moves to improve this team in the now is what ultimately did him in. I don't blame Holmgren for going this route , this will definitely wake up the players that's for sure. |
