I know people are judging Fletcher 100% on his trades, but most, including myself, consider Yzerman as a pretty good GM. Now let's look at his moves...

Most seem pretty solid. Not all great and the Girardi signing was just stupid but he also drafted really well and he always manages to get players to sign for less |

Couldn't agree more. Fletcher is old eyes. I wonder if Hatcher would take an asst GM position. If they turn this team around that is a quite a feather to have in his cap going forward.
We have the talent. Someone is going to come in and look like a wizard with this team... and they will be and I support it as long as the moves make sense - sILKAsSINASALO
If Fletcher would get the job. I don't think it will be a bad thing. He should provide a conservative approach, but not so inflexible as Hextall and hopefully won't trade the farm away. He had the guts to pull off the big trades (Parise-Suter) up against stiff competition. He had a long run with the Wild, meaning he is probably generally liked, and "plays well with others". The Wild did well under him. He may have more ability to make more moves at Philly (Comcast dollars).
If this happens, I wonder if a Zito or Hunter would take an Assistant GM role under Fletcher? Wasn't Pryor basically an Assistant GM... the position is open. |

Keep an eye out; With our current prospect depth, does it hurt that much to lose a 1st round pick in 2019 or 2020? Of course, if we finish in bottom 5 maybe, but with Howard and a healthy Elliott??? Still early in season to make run at playoffs. Metro still in flux.
JIMMY HOWARD, Detroit Red Wings
Age: 34
Stats: 17 starts, 7-6-3, .922 SV%, 2.68 GAA
Contract: Pending UFA, $5.3 million cap hit
Scoop: Howard is single-handedly standing in the way of a complete Red Wings rebuild. He has pulled the Detroit out of the Eastern Conference basement with a 5-1-1 mark and .931 save percentage in November. Their record could be even better, as the Wings lost four games in October when Howard only allowed two goals against. GM Ken Holland tried to move Howard two years ago, but the term on his contract made him a difficult sell. Now Holland is believed to be holding out in an attempt to get a first-round pick in return, a price he may well fetch between now and the Feb. 25 deadline. - cdearth23
I already traded for Howard...
Howard and NYI 2nd for Rubtsov

Good point. What about how other GM's view Fletcher? Is he resepected? That is something that can't be understated, but very hard to determine.
I like the fresh blood because they don't have these histories. Zito also looks like a WWE promoter so that good scare the guys into playing hard. |

They dominated last season. Hak broke them up to play a 3rd pairing talent in Hagg on the 1st pairing. Because he's a terrible coach.
Why would anyone trust your judgement of dmen? You thought LSchenn was worth keeping over Gudas. Which one's in the AHL?
2018 and you're analyzing players using plus minus. But only certain players, of course. Not your boy Wayne Simmonds.
At least you got one thing right. - Feanor
For starters, I never said we should keep Luke Schenn over Radko Gudas. I thought we should keep both because both are right handed and physical. Fast forward to today, we aren’t physical, so nice try tough guy.
Also Luke Schenn wasn’t sent to the AHL, nor Phoenix. So it really doesn’t matter what happens three seasons later.
It’s funny they you need the approval of those who give their opinions around here. Keep reaching. Provorov and Gostisbehere weren’t dominant together. |

That's was Hextall's plan. - FlyerFan16
Hextall screwed himself by not realising he let the cancer get to stage 4 by continuing to trot out and defend his coaching staff.
Screwed himself by basically throwing games away with his choices for goaltending. That's what sucks for me. I agreed with his overall approach, the value he put on draft picks and building to be a top tier organization for multiple seasons (similar to the leafs of present day), and not someone like the Wild who might have made the playoffs, but everyone knew they had no chance in hell at winning anything.
I really do hope, they keep a lot of these values around after Hextall's departure. Was he too conservative in how he wanted these kids handled, etc, etc, and perhaps some other stuff as Bill outlined? Sure. He also was a breath of fresh air, in terms of how you need to build a cup contender in the modern NHL.
This is a crucial time for this organization. Do they get smart and go the way of Shanahan/Dubas? Or do they chase simply making the playoffs. Time will tell. |

The man is signed for 3 more years and hasn’t won a regular season game in months. Battling injury issues and is 32.
Make the bad men stop daddy. - flyer_nutter
I didn’t realize he’s 32! Time flies I remember him as prospect trying to get playing time in Van when luongo was there.
I’m with you, the time to get a goalie was last summer. Now I think I’d be ok with Elliot Stolarz the rest of season and getting a top 5 pick.
But the new GM is coming in with a mandate for action. I’m guessing the first move is to trade for a goalie.
They may buff the team enough with trades to even get in the playoffs which would be another 1st round loss and drafting 18-22 again. |

You don't think it's the right time but by the firing of Hextall and the wording in the Holmgren/Scott presser. I hate to say it. There will be moves for a make the playoffs this season mode. - dragonoffrost
Well of course they aren't going to make a major move like firing their GM mid-season and tell everyone "We give up!". I have to go back to the transcript to find out for sure, I guess I could ask MJL because we all know he has a power point presentation with it already, but they said "We will be busy at the TDL". They didn't say "Busy buying everything for twice as much at the TDL". That still doesn't mean they still can't buy things needed this year. |

Match - I love you but nobody is saying that. I think folks just want to see a balance.
We may have seen the pendulum swing from the extreme in Homer to Hextall. Folks just want middle ground. I think a lot of that "win now" talk by Dave Scott is what got the attention, and honestly - I think rightfully so. |

I was basically trying to point out there is no way they go the way of a tear down and rebuild. I agree with your points. I'm hoping it's not Fletcher but even if it is, I'll give it time before I pass judgement.
I am curious to see how long they give the new GM to get the team to contender status. Dave Scott clearly said he didn't want to wait 3 years. What does that mean? He expects next year? I think it's doable with the right moves but what if they're not? |

This is just a guess. I think Scott sees Giroux producing where he is and thinks we may be farther ahead than we really are. Pure speculation.
More so than anything else, I think he started to get annoyed seeing the money not come in as much. Viewership down 20% last season. It was not by chance you saw Gritty, Taryn and more afternoon games than ever (family friendly), imo.
I'll just go back to this. Its a crucial time. I want the Shanahan/Dubas, or Yzerman approach - and not the Wild or Leafs of old - simply chasing the playoffs, but never being good enough to win it all. You need a hell of a lot more than a goaltender and a 3C, and the one thing Hextall was right about - is that you need to find the majority of your pieces through the draft. |

No they weren’t. You don’t shelter one of the two players on a pair, if they were a dominant pair, let alone split them up. No they weren’t one of the best in the league, otherwise we dominate the Pittsburgh Penguins in the playoffs. |

It’s easier to get players to sign for less when you have a legit Cup contender and a good window to win it. Plus, the taxes down there are favorable for contracts. I’d like Stevie though |
