I think he meant to work on terms of an extension to gauge if a trade for his rights is even viable.

You can’t extend a contract that has ended. It’s a new contract. The permission thing was just a mistake by Ek, certainly not the first.

There's no way the Flames trade Smith unless they're making another trade to bring in a better goalie. They're legitimate Cup contenders this year and aren't going to go all in with a guy who's started less than 30 games and fell off in a huge way last year when given the starting job.

Smith's been decent this year, better than his numbers suggest, and is much more valuable to the Flames as a 1a, or backup if Rittch keeps it up, than whatever the Flyers could give them.
