I wish more teams had the balls to make offer sheets - BeadyEyedDouche
I don't think it's simply a matter of "having the balls". I think it's a matter of cap management. In order to get a player to sign an offersheet and get the team with his rights to walk away is to offer him a contract much more than he's worth. And if you're going to pay a player much more than he's worth, you're most likely going to screw up your cap situation. And there are very few players worth doing that for. The aforementioned Matthews might be one of them, though. |

I'd say it's more about strapping the other team down with an offer they HAVE to match so that THEY have cap issues going forward.
It's a dirty play but man f uck the leafs/sens/habs/bruins |

You're also simply doing that team's negotiating for them, which, to me, is a waste of time. |

Plus you have to pay the lawyers a few hundred dollars to draw up the contract. Yes, that's seriously something they think about. The cheap (frank)s. |

It would be fun to see Toronto squirm if a team offers Matthews the max salary allowed for 7 years. |

Given that these are 7 or 8 figure contracts, they're more like a few to several thousand dollars, but your point still stands. |

What's craziest of all is a lot of the 'good' agents in the league are also lawyers, and they have more clients than they can count on their hands, and what do they get like 5-10% of a player's salary?
They make about as much money as a player does. |

3-6% after escrow apparently.
I remember when this came out. Oh, the outrage.

Bitter much - SABRES 89
In no way. If Matthews signs an offer sheet the Leafs can't match then I would imagine that would be fair game for them to do with a player on another team. I used Dahlin as an example because you're a Sabres fan, so it's relevant.
Matthews, Dahlin, Laine, Connor, Marner, Rantanen, Chabot. All good young players that would be open season for offer sheets once one signs a contract their rights holders can't match.
Barzal, too. And Pettersson. |

And it's kind of dumb to roll the dice to let a player go to RFA. Or a ROR or Weber offersheet could get dumped on you and you have no choice but to sign it and then that player is very overpaid. Just because it worked out well, so far, for the Preds doesn't mean they were smart for signing that stupid offersheet in the first place. And if he retires before the deal is up they're (frank)ed. But he'd probably get an allergy before it came to that. |
