$50,000/yr for housing and $25,000/yr for a car is pretty luxurious.
- Der Kaiser

The car more so than the housing, but yeah, for a tweener it's pretty outrageous. It also depends on the city, you can live like a king for $4K in Buffalo whereas in NY you barely get a two bedroom.

In no way. If Matthews signs an offer sheet the Leafs can't match then I would imagine that would be fair game for them to do with a player on another team. I used Dahlin as an example because you're a Sabres fan, so it's relevant.

Matthews, Dahlin, Laine, Connor, Marner, Rantanen, Chabot. All good young players that would be open season for offer sheets once one signs a contract their rights holders can't match.

Barzal, too. And Pettersson.

3-6% after escrow apparently.

I remember when this came out. Oh, the outrage.

So my numbers were pretty much accurate. I'm sure the top agents make 10% and the lesser guys make about 3%.

Point is, agents have multiple players they represent, and 3-6% of 10 players salaries is several million dollars unless you're negotiating entry-level contracts, which I'm sure they do quite a bit of, if they can. Investments and bankers, investments and bankers, cold wives and mistresses.

WITH MY X-RAY EYES I STRIP YOU NAKED

And it's kind of dumb to roll the dice to let a player go to RFA. Or a ROR or Weber offersheet could get dumped on you and you have no choice but to sign it and then that player is very overpaid. Just because it worked out well, so far, for the Preds doesn't mean they were smart for signing that stupid offersheet in the first place. And if he retires before the deal is up they're (frank)ed. But he'd probably get an allergy before it came to that.
- Wetbandit1

Perhaps it's best to let the player go if the salary is too outrageous. The draft picks the team would receive could be currency to acquire a replacement.

I imagine there needs to be a poor working relationship between the player and management for an offer sheet to actually be accepted and signed. You would think the player and agent would allow the team to match the offer or at least come close to it before signing the offer sheet and squeezing the team if the player respects the management group.

I'm not sure that has to be true, if the player feels they're worth more than what the team says and another team is willing to give it to him it's not much different than shopping around for a new job and taking the offer to your current boss. Yeah, in the hockey sense the player only gets to choose where he doesn't want to go by not accepting an offer whereas you're generally free to pursue any and all opportunities depending on what your contract might say.

I don't think it was true in Weber's case, or Vanek's(how could he turn that monster down? What are they going to do? Say "no thanks, you can take your truck full of money and (frank) off."?). It probably was in ROR's case though.

I don't know if the Sabres should pay Principal Skinner.

Anything more than $8 mil and I think they should walk away

It's a tough choice

Pay that man. If he hits 50, you absolutely sign him. This is Jack's winger on the left side for years to come.

I love how taking Nathan Horton's contract may be a thorn for the leafs to ice a team after paying their other 2 guns this summer

Article on The Athlectic by James Mirle projected after they sign Matthews ($10.5m) and Marner ($9.5m) the Leafs will have $12m to sign 9 players...if they re-sign Gardiner at $6m it just gets worse.
They have issues brewing.
If someone offersheets Marner for $11m ....ohhh boy...or Matthews for $12.5m+ ... holy crap...they have major decisions.

Pretty sure there's a direct correlation between skinner scoring- and skinner scoring as eichel's wing man

Ek9 can't find the net without eichel
That contract is already regrettable

I’d go as high as 8.5 for Skinner.

I doubt he gets more.

I love Skinner, but he’s going to have stretches where he’s invisible. It happens with every pure goal scorer. (Besides maybe Ovi)

My hope is that he takes 7.5-8 per on a 7 year deal

Since 2014-15 Tarasenko has averaged 28.5 EV goals per season.

This year he’s on pace for 13.

Anyone wanna guess his center?

Before the season started I thought EK9’s contract was the perfect comparable for him as they had identical stat lines over their careers. Skinner has had a remarkable start to this year though but once again the Eichel factor looms large here. I definitely agree with the $7.5-$8M long term. Anything more then $8M and we might regret that contract in a few years.

Skinner has always been a more valuable player than Kane, but has never gotten the ice time or teammates.

Regardless, I imagine a 4 year window where Skinner is still an elite goal scorer. After that it might start to slow down

Skinner is our Leon D. When Leon plays with McDavid he’s worth every bit of that $8.5M deal. But when he’s on another line he’s still a good hockey player but not a $8.5M hockey player. If Skinner rides Eichel’s coattails for the duration of the contract then so be it. I want Skinner here long term. I just don’t want the cap hit to be high enough that’s it detrimental to the team adding players in the future. I think 8x8 gets it done. Front load the contract with heavy bonuses so it decreases the money owed in the latter half of the deal to allow us to trade him if in years 6-8 if we have to.
