You can protect 7 forwards, 3 defencemen and a goalie.
And any players with 2 years or less NHL experience are also protected.
It's really not that bad. - Atomic Wedgie
Dahlin and Pilut will both need to be protected.. its not about Dahlin having to be protected its about who would be left available because of it. If it was 20/21 season like originally planned we don't have to even worry about Pilut or Dahlin. |

But when Okposo and Berglund have NTC you have to factor them in. If you can't trade them before the expansion draft, I think you must buy them out. Hopefully there is another amnesty buyout with the new CBA. - adambuffalo
Berglund will be gone and Okposo will have 1? year left if he is still even here.
Edit: it will be Berglunds last year and he has to submit a 15 team NTC. So if Seattle isnt on there he would be exposed.

If this part is correct, does this play into call ups this season? If you can keep someone in Rochester so you don't have to protect them could be a factor in keeping guys down. |

That isnt how it works. It is the same as the Vegas draft. Once the ELC is over they are eligible. And Pilut was only on a 2 year so he is up for grabs too. |

Everyone's ELC is up by the end of 20-21. Does that mean everyone in our system is available? |

That is on our team right now. I believe so yes, our picks this year will be protected though. It is really hard to even project anything right now as our roster could lok drastically different by then so who knows. |

Yes... but 21-22 is a couple of years away. So anyone that is playing in the NHL now would need to be protected, right?
Who would you protect from the Leafs? - ajb2493
If your question is who would I protect if the draft was tomorrow, that's easy:
Kadri
Kapanen
Marleau (I have to because he has a NMC)
Marner
Matthews
Tavares
Nylander (although technically speaking, I think I can leave him off until he plays his first game this year)
Defence? Oh hell, I don't need all three picks.
Gardiner
Rielly
Everybody else is except or poop. Maybe also protect Hainsey, because there's no point in wasting it.
Andersen
Biggest threat to get plucked? Brown or Hyman. Good players, but easily replaceable by the next guy in the line.
Now if you are asking 2 years from now, you'll have to allow me to make some assumptions.
Same forwards, but rermove Marleau. That leaves one slot open for whomever earns it.
Too soon to predict the defence. I'm guessing Gardiner is gone. Dermott will hopefully be good enough to make the list. I doubt that both Liljegren and Sandin see the NHL this year, so at least one of them can remain exempt. The rest is something we will need to examine in two years.
And hopefully Andersen is still playing well enough that I want to protect him.

I may be wrong on this. The rule was:
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
Let me figure out what "professionals" means - it might mean AHL or Euro League experience counts.
I'll be back. |

AHL are pros.
It is why people like Carrier and Ullmark were available for us when it was Vegas turn. AHL or NHL time counts. |

KHL are not i know for a fact. Thats why 26 year olds that have been playing "pro" hockey for 7 years can win the Calder in the NHL. |

Here's what I found (not a great source, I know):
Prospects
All players with fewer than three years of professional experience are automatically exempt from selection. This also includes unsigned draft picks, and signed players that have yet to play a game.
A year of professional experience is 10 professional games played under a NHL contract, including regular season and playoffs. For players who are aged 18 or 19* (on Sept. 15th of a given season), those specifically have to be NHL games. Everybody else it can be any league, as long as it’s under an NHL contract.

So if I'm reading this correctly, the clock starts ticking once you sign your NHL contract - whether it's in the NHL, AHL, or in theory a Euro league (not sure if that happens). |

Yeah so everyone you have now in your system will be available. Picks made this offseason will be protected.

Yeah, I think you've put it perfectly there - "...aren't usually..."
On rare occasions you'll sign a guy (I think?) and let him continue to develop there.
But yeah, simple rule: check your 50 man roster right now - those guys will be eligible for the plucking. |

Sabres are (frank)ed - CoHo_to_B-Lo
Protect Eichel and Dahlin
The rest is gravy. The worst thing a team can do is make a bad bargain like Fletcher did to protect Staal and Dumba (Gave up Tuch and Haula)
If it all goes to poop, just let them pick their player. I'm sure Botterill will figure it out. Who knows what the roster will look like by then.
PS, they can have Okposo now as a brand ambassador to ramp up excitement for the next 2.5 years |

My Mom was a huge hockey fan and the last game we watched together was in October. The Blues made the Leafs look like a pee wee team. The day after that game Mom went into hospice and she died 9 days later, and in her honor tonight the Sabres will also run circles around the Leafs.

Sorry to hear this Tom, genuinely sorry.
