I think Brassard is a good fit. Has been really struggling in PIT(https://www.post-gazette....lson/stories/201812040099) and is UFA. Idk who/what would go back but thats a veteran presence.

So I heard this, wanted to ask:
Vegas is exempt from the Seattle expansion draft???
My initial reaction is WTF!!!!, is this the wrong reaction? They'll be 4 years removed from their draft... |

I don't know. If they weren't so good last year, everyone would just say 4 years isn't time to build up their system.

My understanding is they don't get a cut of the $650m expansion fee, so they're exempt from the draft |

At the end of the day though, they'd still only be losing 1 player. So it's not like it would would decimate their depth. |

True, I'm pretty ambivalent about it. Seems like a reasonable bone to toss into a $500 million deal.

I hear that, but they were successful and by being exempt they may be able to wheel and deal their way to making this expansion into round 2... |

All about the benjamins I guess. I'd rather have the better team, doubt Terry cares about his 1/30th share in the proceeds all that much. We could lose a good player this time... |

True
I'm torn.
I want every team to have to make their list of players. Seems unfair, but they did pay quite the fee for entry. |

$600m/30 = $20m
Not chump change...but it does pay for 2 seasons worth of their $10m Operating Losses. |

The expansion draft is the dumbest thing the NHL does, Give the team entering the league a couple extra draft picks and let them have first crack at free agents.... Nothing like punishing teams that have drafted and developed players vs teams that have nothing to loose. |

If they don't get a cut of Seattle's fee, then I think it's right that they don't lose a player. I'm not ambivalent, if that's correct.

According to this article the Sabres are profitable there is no “Operating Loss”.

(Toggle the graph to operating income. It’s $5M before taxes and interest, but taxes are a cut of income, and I don’t see why Billionnaire Terry would carry significant interest expense). |

And the Coyotes need to buy some gap insurance because they're in a teeeeeensy bit of financial trouble. I was surprised to see that their debt is 103% of their value, but Ottawa is only 27%
I thought Melnyk supposedly way over mortgaged the Sens |

It's not chump change at all, just would bet that if given the choice, Terry keeps the player and lets the money go. I think he's 100% invested.
I mean let us be honest, he didn't buy the sports teams to make money, there are much better investments to be had. |

Still, the Sabres have gained almost $200m in valuation since he bought them. His kids' kids' kids' kids should be just fine |

I agree, actually thought Vegas did get a piece of that pie, but I'm probably wrong. Either way, I just think they should have to follow suit with the rest of the league. Being a new team shouldn't make one exempt, too many issues could arise...
I expect that both Seattle AND Vegas will be trade partners leading up to the draft. I'd imagine more than one player will be gained for Vegas which means they are effectively being given another free chance at acquiring cheap talent from teams that are at risk of losing a quality roster player. That seems unfair to me is all. Give them their 20M... |

What happens if another young guy breaks thru?
Or we trade for someone else?
Or both?
Depends on how they structure the new expansion draft.
I'm not saying I want that to happen.

Too many variables. A lot can happen. I don't even know if Samson is here come the draft. I'd imagine we'd be trying desperately to trade him before losing a 50+ pt player for nothing.
I'd wager we lose a player who is a lot better than William Carrier though... |

Terry paid 5x that for an ice hockey arena for Penn State.
You're right it is a business, but he's certainly given charitable donations of a lot larger amount AND he should understand the strength of the team will effect his profits.
Ultimately, no way to tell. Can't say you're wrong. |

That's a great point.
The Penn state venture is definitely a tax write off.
Not getting 20 million isn't a tax write off.
Or maybe it is? |
