How long is long enough for a fan base to be punished for the dumb moves of a previous GM though? I think the league needs increased flexibility on either contract buyouts or cap flexibility
- jcragcrumple

it starts at the top, really...if they continue to hire crappy gm's, it's their fault...giving more flexibility in buyouts creates a larger disparity between rich and poor teams as the rich teams can dispose of unwanted players until they find the right ones...the poor teams don't have the means to do that

The full guarantee is god awful. Guys like Moulson getting their entire contract and counting against the cap when he belongs no where near the NHL.
- CoHo_to_B-Lo

Yeah. It's crazy. I know Murray made some bad decisions but just doesn't help when you're trying to clean up the previous GMs mistakes. They should have a contract buyout/cap buyout option.

My counterargument would be that the league exists to serve the fans, and the fans don't deserve to watch an inferior product for years because of the mistakes made years ago. The players share no accountability. The owners have no flexibility, and the fans suffer for it.

I understand not allowing GMs to buyout a player they signed themselves, but the fact that we've had dead cap space because Murray signed Moulson 5 years ago is not fair to the fans imo.

solid premise, but the owners have all the flexibility in that they can hire/fire whom they choose

You guys should get rid of 1 of your Rasmus's, too confusing.....maybe a TO / Buff trade. We'll give you a hard working Johnsson back in return.
- Garnie

Remember when the Leafs had Gill, McGill and Gilmour?

I think they did that just to sell more programs.

The NHL cap is horrible. Great for hockey players but bad for teams trying to get out or holding players accountable.
- mattsox

Another thing that irks me about the NHL salary cap is that good teams with good management get punished for doing things right. You have a scouting dept that searches high & low to find talent either through draft or alternate route, spend years developing them through your system and then have to give them away because you can't afford them. Basically you have to spend all of the time, money and resources to develop good players for another teams enjoyment! All for precious parity!
I'd take the baseball route any day!

But no recourse once the mistakes are made. Okposo doesn't lose a penny (and I don't want to pile on the guy, he's been through a lot) no matter how poorly he performs.

My point is that at some point, there should be amnesty from terrible desicions made years ago. It's just not right. I'm not in favor of limitless buyouts, but there has to be some sort of recourse to correct mistakes

It's the one thing I think the NFL gets right.

If you aren't performing, you can be cut or you can restructure your deal with your team. Guaranteed money is still a thing, but only gets handed out to actual star players. The NHL needs escape routes for teams. 1 buyout a year? Player still gets paid so management doesn't get off scott free, but no cap hit???

Allow contract restructuring, performance bonuses.

% of guaranteed contracts so if he is cut only the guaranteed money counts towards the cap.

I'd settle for one buyout every 5 years, and a GM can't buyout a player that he himself signed

It's bullpoop that we could be punished until 2023 because of Murray

Id rather the NHL does not end up like:

MLB - 5 teams matter
NFL - terms of a legally binding agreement mean nothing
NBA - is there another team other than Golden State??

The NHL has a good balance.

As much as I hate the cap as a Leafs fan, I 100% admit it is good for the overall health of the league.

Just look at pro soccer in Europe - what a franking waste of time. The same teams win their leagues every franking year.

It's a fun idea, but the league would never agree to it, because it creates an uneven playing field.

This would lead to owners firing their GM just so they can then buyout a bad contract.

There's no such thing as an even playing field now though. Players (generally) would probably rather play in a warm city than a cold one, original 6 teams have more perceived prestige, Florida has no income tax, etc., etc. There are already variables, and some teams have more in their favor than others, is what I'm trying to say. It's already a "some animals are more equal than others" situation to quote Orwell. Introducing one more variable isn't going to topple the tower
