They mention the cap space that Mtl has (9M) and the move they made when they went after Armia. They took Mason and bought him out right after. Bergevin said to the press that he is looking for that kind of deals once again.

Deals like those are tough to make during the season

I would think so as well, but he said what he said.

So he’s doing (frank) all until July and declared himself the official whore of gm’s?

Nice!

I may be wrong, but I think you are limited to the number (1) of buyouts you can use in a year... so unless he gets a taker for Alzner, not sure there is someone else they would get just to buy out in the summer, unless he is looking to take on expiring contracts from teams looking for cap room at the deadline.

He could target soon to be UFAS. Some teams may not want to wait.

It's a good way to stockpile draft picks as long as the contracts are manageable, as Mason's clearly was

We need picks and/or young players. We are still in a retoll/rebuild. This is not a contender as we speak. If you can't see that....

I sadly still think MB is gonna try to buy his way into the playoffs this year, rather than stockpile, unfortunately.

This team was suppose to be out of it already, this is all gravy and I dont think the pressure is there for him to do that... especially if they're still in a playoff spot in 2 months

I don't think he will sell or buy. If he does either, it will most likely involve low picks.

He may move a guy like Alzner or Benn or go after another LHD (another Kulak).

He may use his cap space as well, but it could be hard to do like you pointed out.

Bergevin most likely saved his job this past summer.

I don't think it is a pressure thing.

MB has stated many times, he believes in getting to the playoffs, where anything can happen.I doubt he has changed his philosophy on this.

I am down for 2-3 years of tanking if it gets the Habs a few more top 5 picks.

So, spend millions of dollars on draft picks to compensate for your terrible drafting.

Be interesting to find out what he really caught Molson with..

Clear out the deadweight (Alzner & Schlemko) + the expiring contract (Benn) on the back end, making room for guys like Juulsen, Kulak, Reilly and eventually Mete to play regular shifts to see what they have in all of them should be the plan before the deadline... see where this group of F can get you, along with Price of course! There's absolutely nothing to lose this season considering the expectations going in, and like you said, Bergevin saved his job last summer, no need to gamble... hes never really done that at the deadline anyway

Sure but I dont mind a team I can actually watch and cheer for either, even if it means drafting a really good D with the 15th pick in June instead of a F in the top 10.

They could have a very interesting group of F in the next 2 years, they should be drafting D anyway

I don't think it was planned... it just kinda started happening because of how bad the team was and inertia sent them in that direction.
