Was there Forsberg like questions if we took him?
- dragonoffrost

I have no idea but he said there were teams willing to pay heavily to move up and select him. Kypreos is in that old school, have a beer and bullsit category. So I'm sure a lot of the stuff he gets comes from pro scouts, a lot of which he probably played with. Just my guess.

Oh I don't doubt it that teams would have moved up. The thing is did Hextall see any red flags?

It's a shame the Ducks are capped out. Could be a good fit for Simmonds and they have some interesting pieces in their pipeline to work with.

I think Buffalo could be a real good fit too.

The Ducks aren't capped out. They could easily fit Simmonds in.

I'm not sure they're running him down and this is just my take, but if you're going to be intractable about draft and develop then you better hit on your picks or a good portion of them in the first round. I'm still shocked he got fired and Hakstol is still here.

Kypreos mentioned Patrick and Pettersson specifically today while walking back the fact that everyone thought Patrick was the pick when Hextall made it. Basically something like "Patrick may have some good seasons ahead of him but he'll never be Pettersson. That kid's special and when that happens don't think that the people above you don't notice. Don't think for a minute that didn't have something to do with Ron Hextall being fired." He went on to discuss the number of teams that actually had Pettersson as the number one overall pick which he said was about a handful.

- mayorofangrytown

It's after the fact. It was a consensus that Patrick and Hirschier were neck and neck for first overall. I think this is being invented. I don't like how Holmgren has conducted himself lately and decision he has made lately, but this doesn't pass the smell test.

I actually saw that, and I am throwing the bullpoop flag on that -- man, we all remember the truth. I don't know what other teams had on their boards, and it's entirely possible people had Pettersson higher on their boards.

But they weren't saying that poop that night, at the draft. Nobody was saying that in the pre-draft projections, and nobody was saying that until now, when Patrick's progression hasn't been linear.

Again: You know me pretty well by now, how I think. I think you actually read my posts and know that I'm not an apologist.

Maybe one day, Pettersson will clearly be the best pick, the most obvious choice of who should have been taken.

All I'm saying is nobody was saying that poop THEN, or even at the start of this season. Pettersson playing well is making people do some revisionist history

Agree. Patrick was also seen as the unanimous #1 overall for years. I remember joking we should just tank for McDavid Matthew's patrick in a row.

Also I found it very interesting Scott decided to hire Holmgren a day to day boss. Tells me hes as much on the hot seat as anyone else.

See, that's the thing: Homer's getting old. They (frank)ed up and actually made Dave Scott pay attention, and the last thing you want is a guy like that to look up and start asking questions about what the (frank) you do all day

Absolutely correct. If Holmgren and others in the Flyers brass are actually saying this, which I doubt, we've got bigger problems than we think. Pettersson may wind up the best player in the draft. That's the way it is. I still have no doubts that Patrick is going to be a top 6 center in this league for a long time if not a #1 center.

Agreed. They're making it sound like Patrick is a bust. I had no problem with selecting him then and I have no issue with us selecting him in hindsight. He's going to develop into a good player.

I do think that by trading Schenn Hextall's put a good bit of added pressure on Patrick to immeadiately perform as a top six player however.

I’m sure all the scouts and GMs are coming out of the woodwork claiming how high they had Pettersson and how special they thought he was. Fact is that #3 slot was up for sale. If these teams were that certain of it they all could’ve struck a deal

Can always add a contract slot. I have to correct myself on the cap space though. I just looked at the current cap situation further. They have the space they have because Perry is on LTIR. Unless he's out for the season, that situation will change.

Half the fan base thinks it's time to move on from Simmonds and the other half thinks he's the second coming. He's not going to make everyone happy with what he decides to do with him either way, and that might be the first deal he has to decide on as GM.

I don't think they can fit Simmonds without doing another deal or for a roster player worth around the same as Simmonds. So unless that player is Manson or Montour...no thanks.

If they could fit Simmonds I think they could have real interest. The Ducks love their power forwards and are somehow getting by at 2nd place in the Pacific with a -10 goal differential. They need goals in a bad way.
