He doesn't really have a choice, no? Doubt another NHL team gives him the role he wants. And the suspension keeps him from getting paid.
He needs a new contract - Sabresfan-365
He can report when the suspension is up, and be a sour puss while collecting his paycheck. I don't believe the sabres will indefinitely suspend him for 4 years. That would result in a PA grievance, I'm sure. |

Where would nhl retirement to the khl a la kovalchuk leave the sabres and blues cap wise? - Sabresfan-365
If it was a terminated contract,
then i don’t think either team would be hit by the Cap
Nj wasn’t
but that was also a special circumstance
Didn’t we let Kotalik go to Europe a few years ago instead of playing here, or being sent to Rochester or something?
Pretty sure he didn’t count against our Cap that season
Maybe a similar deal could be worked out with Berglund & he can go play in Sweden or KHL or wherever

His best play is to state in writing he is prepared to return and file a grievance today. It forces the issue ASAP,, as I’m sure the Sabres don’t want him back AND don’t want to pay him. |

Agreed
Murphy has shown more in 1 quarter than McCoy has all year, and I really liked McCoy |

Both probably right, i dont know that he can play here again though after pulling the trigger on his initial absence. |

I think they have to get rid of him. I just don't know how that actually happens. Pach made a good point, maybe Hitch would want him? |

Other rochester folk have come around... kinda (bar wasn't set too high)
I don't know, the numbers are finally there. I think if he shot the puck more he'd have some legit NHL upside. - Sabresfan-365
Not that Nylander was a bad prospect, but...
1- should’ve taken a defenseman
2- Nylander was the “playmaker” type, and not really seen as the “goal scorer” type of winger that we needed
I just didn’t understand that pick at all at the time
Still hoping I’m wrong about him though |

there's enough evidence out there to suggest that drafting based on need is more likely to hurt you then help you.
They took what they thought was the most talented player. Their strategy wasn't wrong, their assessment and possibly the criteria they used was likely where it went wrong. |

For those wondering, NJ is paying a cap recapture penalty on Kovalchuk through the 24/25 season.
It's the result of the front loaded structure of his deal. Berglund's isn't nearly as bad, but still has some. |

I didn't say he would, but for example and I say EXAMPLE only, if Tarasenko is actually being moved, a deal like that might entice him. I would be hesitant adding two first though, maybe 1 or a 2nd. May cost a roster player also. - SABRES 89
Tarasenko would be VERY tempting to trade for
His skating & scoring could be a really nice fit
There’s quite a few guys that are scheduled to be a UFA after this year though who we might be able to get without giving up assets
Stone from OTT would be tops on my list
30goal scorer who skates well & is one of the better defensive forwards in the league
Probably cost around 8mil per |

I'd believe some teams would be interested if they could negotiate a different deal.
Could be Berglund's angle. At his current usage/scoring rate, he's a buyout candidate. He gets bought out after a year like this, he probably never sees the NHL again.
If he can get on a new team now, one that can use him in an offensive role, it might be enough to convince a team to offer up a year or two in FA. |

I'm just saying, if your client has a full NMC that changes to a modified clause on July 1, it's your job to have it there and in place for when the contract changes. That's the job - jcragcrumple
Very true
No disagreement here
Just a hypothesis on what happened
Seems like his agent definitely blew it |

I don't see Berglund voluntarily agreeing to void his contract though. He has $12m left on the contract and he's unlikely to make that much money on future contracts. I think he'll say that he's very sorry, and that he's ready to be a team player now. If they're trying to void the contract, the Sabres are going to have to try to find language in the contract that the relationship is irreparably broken, and that they don't believe he's likely to honor the standard of play. I'm not a contract lawyer though, I only play one on the internet |

Before i heard about this BS,
i actually proposed that he be given a shot on the wing in the top9
Obviously he didn’t work at 2C,
but he’s been playing wing for StL the last couple years & was scoring at a pace of about 23/24 goals for a full season
Maybe try him with Mitts or Eichel or whoever?
But now...
it’s tough to see where there’s gonna be a resolution that brings him back
Especially if what 89 heard is true & his complaining was going on in the room & becoming a distraction |

Someone correct me if I am wrong here but I thought recapture penalties go against the team that signed the player to the contract not the team he is on? |

Drafting based on need isn’t the same thing i suggested though
Sergachev & Chychrun we’re both rated just as high- or higher
And Nylander wasn’t the type of forward we should’ve been looking for
It’s not just about drafting talent alone
U still gotta choose guys that are the right “fit”
Obviously that’s what they thought they were doing,
but i disagreed
Just didn’t make sense to me |

Pretty much. Hearing about the Jeff Carter retirement threat, his hit would to the team he was on when the contract took effect (CBJ), rather than the signing team (PHI). Odd technicality. |

Well he can go play with Moulson for all i care
At this point,
it’s hard to see him coming back here |
