I know you weren't being personal.

truth be told, i wouldn't mind if we abolish all of these stupid group names to begin with. Pom Poms / Whiners / Tankers. Its all so stupid.

To me it’s never been about bottoming out in the standings. They’ve already done that a few times lol. It’s always been about the (lack of) long term direction. The fact that they’ve accidentally tanked multiple times is not impressive. I don’t buy the stealth tank nonsense. It’s up there with #FlatEarth #HollowMoon

Then there’s the smaller things. Our CHL scouting, our management/pro scouting’s lack of ability to find good dmen(insert Gudbranson argument here). Overpaying players and spending close to the cap when that cap space could’ve been used to take on a bad shorter term contract.

On the bright side, this is the year I’ve been least frustrated. Let’s be honest, it’s mainly due to how great and fun to watch EP is. And Benning deserves credit for drafting him for sure. If Hughes turns out to be a top pairing dman then it starts to get easier to look over mistakes in the past. But eventually they’ll need to make a move to bring in a GM who can help this team take the next step imo.

I know this post is going to annoy some people, and that’s fine. I’ll jist end the discussion here from my side and let you guys continue if you wish.

TLDR: Still don’t like Benning as GM, but if his first round picks pan out then he’s done enough good here to give the next GM a chance to build a good team which means he did OK. Scouting staff needs change, specifically in the CHL and pro level.

- Nucker101

You are probably less frustrated this year because of some of the long term planning Canucks have done. Keeping Pettersson and Hughes out the extra year is sure looking good. Sticking with OJ and Jake is long term planning.

I remember when Sutter came here you were one of the most vocal posters here. Gudbrandson also. I think Canucks are a better team with both those players in the lineup . Sometimes you have to look beyond the stats sheet. That said everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I think their scouting has grown over the years and got better. Just because they aren't picking from the CHL (Woo) looks like they have found better options (Hughes Madden) . They are 4 for 5 on the last few trades with their pro scouting ( Motte Leivo Dahlen Goldobin Leipsic)

I think the team is passing expectations seeing EVERYONE had them finishing last.

I hate to but I agree with most of this. My only argument with Gudbransen is other that the draft where are we finding these good D men that are available? I mean really not everyone has a Hall to trade for an elite D like Larsen.

BS

How many 2 round picks have the Canucks had playing on their team in the last 10 years? You are speculating. Demko was drafted in 2014 and he is just beginning to be ready. That means at the most one or more two second round picks would have changed everything?

- VANTEL

I thought the same thing. People are clinging to that narrative for dear life as well.

I’m the opposite of you lol. I think Sutter is a fine checking line player, I think he would be an asset on a top team as well. Gudbranson to me is a 5/6/7 type dman on a team with legit cup aspirations.

All we can do is agree to disagree though.

It seems like after every winning streak the “its not so bad” narrative gets pushed hard and after a losing streak starts it’s back to “so who’s your fav prospects in the 4-7 range?”

- Nucker101

This is 100% accurate. Still, the losing streaks are becoming less often and the winning streaks more often. I'm excited about that shift. That's my narrative.

They crazy thing is we’re still a playoff bubble team. We have two factions in here. Tankers and pom poms. I understand that we need to lose for Hughes but we really are not bad enough. We are also not good enough for a playoff run. Which puts us in a bad spot picking. I just want to see my team win and I think they can keep doing it. I still hope we are sellers at the deadline.
- thundachunk

Luckily, our GM is capable enough to find players like Boeser out of the top 10.

In general, I agree with This, although I believe there is another group that isn't in the pom-pom or tanker group, just that they want to see the team play well, win or lose and if a top pick is the result so be it. This group has no playoff expectations, but do want too see some cleansing of the roster.

My comment to Nucker wasn't meant to be offensive in any way, as I have stated fairly recently, that he would be a good blogger for the Seattle team.
I respect Nuckers opinions, whether I agree with them or not.
Pretty sure Nucker new what I was refering to.
Thanks for your concern though.

Don't be ridiculous, yes there's been a mix of good and bad but even the worst of General Managers will eventually produce a better team with constant bottom finishes. The Canucks are fun to watch because of three players, Horvat, who Benning inherited, Pettersson and Boeser. Five years in the making.

Most rebuilds take much, much longer. Ask Chicago, LA, Edomnton and Clagary fans. This argument has no legs. JB has done a above average jobs and most importantly has improved.
