I’ll take Jack over Laine. - Pairo11
Apparently the first 20 games of the season he was carrying the Jets from the 3rd and 4th line. Something Eichel could never do! |

Laine isn’t even half the player Jack is.
Laine is an elite shooter, and average in every other aspect |

"Eichel now has 44 points on the season".
Typo? 45
Jack has been a dominant force in the league for about 20 games or so. At this point in the season, he deserves to be mentioned in the running for the Hart trophy. If I were picking the 3 finalists today it would be McJesus, ECHL and Mackinnon. |

I would say below average defensively hence the doghouse and being buried early on in the year as he doesn't back check or even skate to the defensive zone. But i guess having an incredible shot = carrying the team. Half of his goals this season came in a 4 game span. |

McDavid, Matthews and Laine are better than Jack as these players can single handedly change a game and elevate the rest of the team which is something Jack lacks. If not for Skinner we would still be in the basement. MLew65
I take your comment and want to dissect it. The NHL is a team game, no individual will take his team to the next level by himself. Sure for a single game, a player could rise late in the game and help his team win.
2017-18 Maple Leafs (made playoffs, lost in 1st round)
Marner 69 points
Matthews 63 points (in 62 games)
Nylander 61 points
Kadri 55 points
Van Riemsdyk 54 points
2017-18 Oilers (missed playoffs)
McDavid 108 points
Draisaitl 70 points
Nugent-Hopkins 48 points
Strome 34 points
2017-18 Jets (far into playoffs)
Wheeler 91 points
Laine 70 points
Ehlers 60 points
Scheifele 60 points (in 60 games)
Conner 57 points
2017-18 Sabres (last place in league)
Eichel 64 points
ROR 61 points
Reinhart 50 points
Okposo 44 points
I guess the take away is, the only team to make the playoffs had a bit higher individual stats. Do you want a winning team or a single player with high potential?
Matthews can take over a play, but I don't think he can take over a game. He has always had better line mates than jack. Now Matthews has Tavares another top end center and great wingers to help tally points.
Laine has an amazing shot. He plays 2nd - 3rd line with great center and a better all around team. He has great players setting him up. Don't see many highlights of him taking it around 3-4 players and scoring a great goal, most of the time it is just hit shot (which is elite).
McDavid has blazing speed and play making ability. Is not great at back checking and has a great second player to help him on his team (Draistl).
Eichel is only good this year because he has a guy that can finish? But all the guys above have already had that for years and they are better? The best part is we get to watch these guys compete for years to determine who is the best.
Can't wait to see the contracts that Laine and Matthews get, and then we can use that in the category of who is the best "deal".
Matthews should want $13+. Laine should want $11+. Will be interesting. |

Trouble in Toronto? Who should be captain? Tavares? Matthews (who had beef with Babcock)? Marner?
I really hope two teams offer sheet Marner and Matthews, just to see Toronto match and pay too much for each of them. |

not sure i'd want to pay $11M to a player with only 49 goals in a 192 games no matter how much his dad thinks he's one of the top players in the league |

Mitch Marner is my 2nd favourite player behind a Eichel right now in the NHL. He is an elite playmaker. Might even be the best playmaker in the entire world right now including McDavid. P |

How about Nylander at ~$7 for 48 goals in 190 games?
So interesting. How can they pay Nylander a different cap hit for this year compared to other years?
CapFriendly says $10.2m this year and $6.9m for the 5 years after.
I understand the prorated salary amount this year, but I thought the cap hit was the average of all the years, not mattering if the salary varied? |

fair enough...glad Toronto has the decision to make, not buffalo but paying him $11M is going to throw the entire salary structure out of whack

CLANK is goalless in 4 straight. His poise is evident though. He has been better then Pominvlle in drawing guys in allowing Eichel to get enough space to get that wrister off. |
