Carter Hart aside, Sanheim's usage was encouraging.

It was a win! That's a good thing, right?

*reads other posts*

Right, you guys??

*goes back to making Jori Lehtera cocaine jokes*

I'm glad they won -- everybody is.

But this "Hakstol is gone, the curse is lifted" bullpoop is ridiculous. What are we gonna do when they struggle under Gordon -- which, at some point, they will -- make ridiculous excuses like "he lost the room?"

I never said Dave Hakstol was Scotty Bowman. But I bet you Scotty Bowman wasn't winning a single extra game than Dave Hakstol was with Pickard giving up 40-footers in the net

Lmao yea he told them never to get up ice?? Come on, that's not what we are saying, there was a CLEAR difference last night in the Dmen pushing the play.

There was a clear difference in the entire team from past games. LMAO.

They played better to an extent, but their opposition was weak and they still had some issues defensively. Also, after the first Detroit goal, they definitely sagged a bit, which they can't do against better team.

But overall, they seemed to play with more pride and attitude, which is what I want. If they don't have the talent to beat teams, fine. But as long as they going out there and giving what they have, and play hard for 60 minutes I can live with that.

- jmatchett383

Totally agree. The team was at least watchable last night. Too many times this year have I turned off the game in disgust. I don't mind a losing 60 minute effort. But when you blow a 5-3 in the third...

Nashville will be a good test. #HartnellDown night! I would die if he gives a little slip for the fans walking out on the ice.

The Dmen who moved up in the play.
- MJL

Maybe they felt comfortable moving up in the play because the coach wouldnt demote them if they did.... Point is we dont know either way.

The Flyers primary PK system in the defensive zone under Hakstol and Lapariere has been the wedge +1 or triangle +1.

Was Sanheim demoted for his two goals on the rush on semi breakaways?

I called out a specific aspect of the game, you came back with the Dmen moved up into the play... Why do you think so? Maybe the coach told them to????

This. It's why I've never actually clicked any of his links.

Can we demote you from the comment section haha. I'm all for back and forth but it's painful to see someone stick to their opinion when they are dead wrong.

Nhl hockey players have been player different styles for years growing up it doesn’t require practice to know the structure of a different system. Practice improves effectiveness but coaches aren’t explaining never before seen concepts when they change systems.

Last night on the forecheck the flyers used an aggressive 2 2 1 instead of a passive 1 2 2.

On the pk they used a wedge +1 instead of a passive box.

Gordon didn’t have to teach the players how to play these styles, he just told the players that’s what they going to do when he talked to them before the game.

IMO 2 years ago Hak enforced a change in the Flyers. IMO he took out all grit from the players game because they were taking too many penalties. This is what lead to Simmonds effectiveness dropping in addition to Gudas, and anyone else that played with "passion". I also believed he put restraints on the defense to keep them from joining the rush, or being "creative". Changing those 2 things could be enough to change this team.
- youarewrong

Hakstol definitely wanted the team to play more disciplined and stop taking penalties. With the Flyers PK what coach wouldn't? There weren't any restraints put on defenseman from joining the rush nor from any player from being creative.

FFS, man -- we get it. You hate the coach.

But this constant "he's not up to the job" is just garbage.

He made the playoffs twice with young defensemen, average goaltending, put Sean Couturier in the position to succeed that his predecessor had not.

Was he the best coach the Flyers have ever had? No. No one ever said that.

Just because some of us don't hold him responsible because Jake Voracek can't figure out when to shoot or pass, Wayne Simmonds can't handle or make passes consistently, and Ghost's "lost confidence" means he stops playing defense -- which is his (frank)ing job -- doesn't mean he's a bad coach

Maybe he has weaker players than we want to admit

Playing tight leads to frustration which can lead to a player not keeping his feet moving. It has nothing to do with effort. Case in point. During my first season in Bantam, I played for an excellent coach who was a pleasure to play for. He understood that mistakes were going to happen and he didn't overreact when you screwed up. Also, if he had something to say to you that was a criticism, he took you aside and didn't do it in front of your teammates. Every guy on the team played their butts off for this guy and we had a blast doing so.

The next season, still in Bantam, our coach was a guy who had actually played pro in the old Eastern League. He was the worst coach I ever played for. He constantly belittled guys in front of the whole team and his answer to everything was "shut the (frank) up and work harder". His strategy was basically go after the puck, get it, and score. We rarely, if ever, practiced any kind of set breakouts or any manner of special teams. You knew if you made a mistake, you were going to get reamed out in front of the entire team and probably benched for a shift or 2.

So, what happened? Guys were hesitant. They would slow up, not from lack of effort, but from fear of making mistakes and not wanting to do the wrong thing. We spent too much time thinking about the coach and what not to do instead of just reacting and playing the game, and that is always a recipe for failure.

Now, pro sports is light years beyond a bunch of 14 year old kids playing bantam, but some basic tenets hold true at all levels. When you are frustrated and/or afraid to screw up, your natural inclination is to be hesitant on the ice. It will seem to the casual viewer to be a lack of effort, but what it really is, is a lack of confidence combined with a fear of failure. Hakstol certainly is a good hockey coach, you don't get to where he is if you aren't. But just because he's a good hockey coach and for that matter a good person, doesn't mean that he's going to be successful coaching in the NHL. Like it or not, the league has changed quite a bit over the last couple of decades and coaches need not only to be good coaches, but also, at least to some degree, sports psychologists too.

You need to which players need a pat on the back and which respond better to a kick in the ass. You need to know which guys have thick skin and can take a chewing out and which are sensitive and would respond better to a quiet chat. You need to make sure that the key veterans are on the same page as you and that the kids are comfortable and being put in a position to thrive. Scott Gordon may not be the next Quenneville or Hitchcock, but he's been coaching NHL and AHL players for a decade and he knows how to communicate with them. I'm not sure that Hakstol was skilled enough in this department to succeed in today's NHL.

I have a "Hart" on for Carter. Thought he played well in a big spot. Not just his first NHL game, but this team and organization needs stability. Lots of pressure. He handled it well. Preds will be a different challenge. Hope he gets the start.

I thought Sanheim looked like a different player. That was a taste of what we can expect from him. Still a ways to go as he develops, but he looked confident.

Provy played well. Happy Ghost and JVR got goals. Hope they start to pick it up. Thought Patrick looked like he had a purpose. TK and G have developed really nice chemistry. Some of their passing was incredible.

AMac was a wreck out there. Looked like he didn't belong on the ice.

I like what Varone brings to the 4C or 4th line role.

As many of us have said, it is only one game. Let's build on this and get moving in the right direction. Preds will be a challenge. It will be nice to see Lavy back.
