Relax Cooper is not that kind of guy. He was just saying good job for standing up for yourself with two behemoths breathing down on you. And the hit wasn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Hits are part of the game and Stech's head was bent over trying to look for the puck in his feet and got cranked. Stecher will be fine.

I think it goes to the whole 'players in a vulnerable position' thingy.
Anyway, I'm not that upset about the hit but the optics of a coach doing what he did stink. Save it for the locker room or a quick pat on the back like coaches always do. Nobody would have noticed that.

He was fist-pumped by the coach for taking a few upper cuts from Gudbranson when the ref had Martel pinned while trying to hold Virtanen back, which was a few plays after the Stetcher hit. Stop spreading false narratives.

I'm ok with a coach having a player's back, particularly when it's only the player's 4th or 5th NHL game.
This fanbase is as soft as the team.

I think the fistbump came way later. Gudbranson and Virtanen went after Martel when he came out of the penalty box (serving the interference penalty for the hit). Virtanen went after him, and then Gudbranson gave him the uppercut and his helmet came off. The refs sent Martel to the penalty box, talked it over, then sent him to the dressing room (I think because he was leaking blood). I am pretty sure it was when he was heading off to the dressing room after the scuffle that Cooper gave him a fist bump, and like Marwood said, it was probably more-so for hanging in there while getting jumped by a couple players.

there was a interview with Cooper, it was a fist bump for taking a bunch of shots and still standing up for himself. He had a rough ride, I'd a done the same the kid's 5'8 and getting thrashed by pro's.

That doesn't suit the moral victory crowd.
Only Canuck fans can find a way to celebrate a loss.

Makes a certain amount of sense. There was no way Juolevi was stepping in the top4 next year though. Hughes maybe. Juolevi was getting torched in his own end in Utica, learning fast though

I have to agree, if Green fist bumped Gudbranson for his upper cut, everyone here would be applauding.

They free agent LHD is pretty weak. Edler and Gardiner headline a UFA class followed by a bunch of older guys and Jordie Benn, Ben Chariot, Patrick Nemeth

Im a part of that group. Im not happy they lost, but im happy with the effort and the push back and overall game the canucks played against the best team in the league. That was a damn entertaining game.

I don't think all the onus should be on him because there are more factors to this story. For one, he was playing top minutes against other teams top lines, two, his partner was mostly Chatfield - who blows, and three Kubakov is barely an ECHL goalie - so he wasn't getting much help. You're right, Utica were getting torched, but its unfair to make it OJs fault.

A blindside hit is total BS too ,and getting fist bumped by the coach on the bench for a cheap shot.

All that aside it was a very fun game.

Also, the fist bump wasn’t for the dirty hit...

I will be sure to check the lightning thread the night Tom Wilson lights someone up with a questionable thread.

I wouldn't.

I think it was more than just a congrats for taking a beating.

How many coaches go to the gate as a player's coming off to give them some love? He didn't fist bump any of the players who scored goals.

I like the kid. I think he'll be top4 eventually for us. Facts are facts, blaming everything but him doesn't really do the situation justice either. He was improving, that's the main thing IMO.

I'm making mountains out of mole hills. Good game but that bump did piss me off. I think the beating taught the kid a thing or two about playing with a bit if respect hopefully.

Nothing wrong with Gardiner. I would be stoked if we got him at a fair price to replace Edler. Not quite as good defensively but paired with Tanev would be very nice. Also, makes us a more mobile team with him and Hughes. Myers is higher on my wish list, but Gardiner is very good.

If you watched a kid take a beating like that, you'd give him a bump or a pat. Tough game for a young guy, coach is just saying "way to keep your head up kid"

Fine, fine. Coach appreciated the beating.
But my old school mentality says if you are going to play like that then you have to expect to deal with the retaliation. Justified or not. It's how every team reacts these days. I don't see a need for a congratulations.

Funny, every young generation gets a label.

I was thinking if a game like Van vs TB is good or bad for a team like the lightning. Does the coach want to get out of rogers as fast as possible with their two points and get back to playing meaningful games? A Stanley Cup favorite getting into a mid-season trench war with a non-conference bottom dweller is a risk I don't think you want to take.
