I get that for sure. And maybe his style does translate to a longer career, although speed is a big part of his game and most players lose a step as the get into their 30's.
So, $8.5 x 6 = $51m ; and $8.0 x 7 = $56 ... $5m is not chump change, but he could make that up and more IF he remained productive.
I have faith in Botteril, he has negotiated some good contracts already...
Maybe the way is to get the AVV to work out to $8m or less on a longer term by reducing the salary in the final couple of years, but increasing the early years..so something like 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8, 6, 6 ...gets to $63 with avv slightly less than $8m. I could go with that, not much more though. - IonSabres
Go check out the article about him I posted a little while ago. He's an anomaly in a lot of ways, so trying to predict what's going to happen once he hits a certain age is tough. |

I don't think anyone over the age of 27 is a good idea for this team at this point. Anyone who's produced to the point that it would be helpful would probably have a pretty high salary for an extended period of time and would also require a decent amount going back the other way. Just doesn't fit with what JB is putting together here. - HonkFortheGoose
Great point, unless the term is short... it also going to be very hard and expensive to obtain someone under 27 that’s really good...
We really need 2 of nylander, olofsson, Smith to pan out... and provide that next level of scoring or get really lucky with one of those first round picks.

Yeah. I get it. But we're not getting rid of Okposo for someone that's actually going to be helpful at this point. Realistically, is anyone going to take back a $7M salary of a guy that clearly is struggling big time? If we do manage to dump him somewhere, it's going to be for pennies on the dollar. - HonkFortheGoose
Just dumping the salary would be huge... don’t want anything back.

Okposo is at $6m for 4 more. The question is, is there a comparable salary and time line that would make sense for both sides to swap? Loui Eriksson is the most obvious example |

It sure does.... looking back GMTM really really screwed up this rebuild trading all those picks, and not drafting well.

For some reason I thought he was $7. So $6 is even better. Still tough to move, but maybe a bit easier. In any event, while I think everything he's gone through is tough and I feel bad for him, at the same time he's clearly not pulling his weight especially when you factor in the salary. Time to try and move on in some way.
He's also probably one good hit away from ending up receiving the Pronger/Savard treatment (aka LTIR and part of the Arizona organization) |
