Stay with the big 2 if you can Sony or Samsung. LG is ok but not on their level IMO.
For $800 I would go with the Sony 55" 750/850 series might be a bit closer to $999 but worth the few hundred extra. For under $800 you are kinda gonna 'get what you get' for picture quality.
To be honest I would just spend $1299 and get the 55" Sony 900F. reviews exceptionally well and has 'full array local dimming' which models under $1000 just don't have. Black levels on the Sony are great it's the model I'm looking at but I'm going 65".
or the Samsung 55" Q8 might be a touch more than the Sony 900F but well worth it. - LordHumungous
I was leaning towards buying it through costco.
The samsung 7100 series is on sale for 650.00
Looking to buy a second house to house my growing family so I'm trying to punch pennies on the second tv. I'll check out the Sony as well. |

I went Panasonic, found picture quality better than both of those you mentioned, and a bit cheaper than both. - Reubenkincade
TCL is interesting for that reason and reviews very well. Nobody I know has one though. |

In my experience, it’s all about the black levels and refresh rate. Find a brand with the best range in these two categories and you should be more than satisfied with any choice of brand.
Edit: should have replied to Prez. - bloatedmosquito
The lg seems to have better black levels but as lefty said, it's very reflective. |

Fair enough. I think Costco carries the Sony's too. Nothing wrong with Samsung I have a 50" Sammy downstairs 8 years old still going strong zero issues it's a mid-level model.
The 55" Sony 750 I think is $849 very good picture for the cash.
Good luck. |

Black levels are great on LG's OLED tv's but again you want to stay away from that technology. |

Panasonic is fine. Had one years ago and it did great. Had a really good Sharp as well. Now I have a LG. Also fantastic. Just purchase the right mix of features and specs and you’ll be satisfied. |

I get the argument that some guys can be on a line with two other elite players and benefit from it, obviously that happens. But that's just not the case with Goldy. He's a talented playmaker and no amount of blind hate is gonna change that fact. Look when Leivo played with BB and EP, he had 1 assist in 10 games. - Brooks_Light
Really ? How'd he make out points wise last year? Sedins are the best offensive players in franchise history... surely his elite playmaking would have been on full display lining up with two hart trophy winners ??? Nope hot (frank)ing garbage. |

That’s how I’ve burned out most of my TVs. Video games used to be brutal on most tv displays. Bit different these days. |

True. Which is why I usually recommend full array local dimming such as the Sony 900F has. Edge lighting has gotten much better yes but you just won't find great black levels or refresh rates on models under $800 for the most part. Unless one can find a blowout model new in box of a higher end nature and those deals are out there. Right around March every year the new models hit the shelves and if one is shrewd enough you can grab a NIB model that was around $2699 for $1500. those are the best deals to me when it comes to black levels and such.
OLED is a tech you want to stay way from right now. Black levels amazing yes but they still have been unable to fix the burn in issues and retention problems like old plasma used to have. The full array LED's are still the way to go IMO. The Samsung Q8 looks amazing but is pricey and their panels outlast the Sony's too. Also to bear in mind in today's tv market is most of the panels are built by robots now and have a life expectancy of 5-7-9 years which sucks. I've seen panels go in less than 6 years now which sucks if one is spending over $2000 on a higher end model. - LordHumungous
The samsung 50 inch 7100 has full array local dimming |
