It's pretty obvious the Flyers don't have that with this team. - MJL
Players didn't buy in for 4 coaches long term. Hence the need to get rid of some of them. |

There are only 7 Flyers players from that 2012 Flyers/Pens series that are still in the league. That's how long it's been. |

In the context that Trotz is talking about, the Flyers had it last year. They were a solid team defensively at 5 on 5. If you study the replays of the goals the Flyers have given up this season, you'll see a lot of the cheat that Trotz is referring to.

That question is one of the great mysteries that even experienced coaches like Ken Hitchcock struggle to answer. I think the Flyers got into some really bad habits early and it snowballs from there. Then it becomes a huge mental hurdle. There is such an inconsistency of team structure and urgency. It really doesn't make sense because doing what is expected away from the puck as a team is not really about talent. We've seen team after team become stronger as a whole than their talent would suggest just by buying into the team game and structure.
The recent Carolina game was the epitome. No structure whatsoever. The entire team playing as an individual. Pucks won on the forecheck, nobody filling the scoring lanes. Nobody to pass the puck to. No presence in the neutral zone. Nobody in the middle of the ice. Free skates for the opposition. The entire team playing on the perimeter. Large gaps, nobody for the defenseman to outlet the puck to leading to giveaways, icings, etc.

It’s gone completely off the rails. They’ve already fired the coach, the only option left is to change some of the players. There certainly is no one magic move that will save this season. The hole that they’ve dug for themselves is simply too deep. |

So do they have it or not? If they had it last season but dont have it this year despite having 90% same players and the same coach..... |

There is no sign of it whatsoever but the Flyers could go on a tear and they still wouldn't make the playoffs.

Sure and I anticipated that answer but since that's not what he gets paid for his first priority is to the NHL rather than something outside such as the Olympics - MJL

My point was you cant say they are dedicated to team D one season and not the next.
In actuality they never had it. They sucked defensively last season 2. Difference was they were able to outscore their opponents.
2017-18 GF 3.04 GA 2.88
2018-19 GF 2.79 GA 3.59
While the against number is much higher you also have to consider the goalie situation. Pickard had a GAA of 4.00 with PHI |

Last season, the Flyers were 9th in the league in GA at 5 on 5. That's top 10.
This season they rank 27th in the league at this point in time. A drastic difference.
The Flyers had a much stronger commitment to team defense last season compared to this season.

I dont think signing a FA and trading him halfway into a down year is a way to attract other players to come to your city. That absolutely is going to make everyone who signs ask for a full NTC which is going to make things more difficult on the GM as opposed to moving what he can now, and hoping with an effective 2C or 3C and an offseason/training camp spent improving chemistry that JVR can turn it around. |

Pretty much.
All it takes is for one guy out of five to be out of sync to throw the entire system off.
They've shown that they are capable of playing as a unit (see: Period 1 last night), but some of the players are so fragile... the first sign of adversity and they start pressing, coughing up the puck, wandering outside of the system. |

I've never left the Hextall bandwagon, but signing JVR was a mistake.
He's never been anything more than a pure offensive weapon. Defense-optional, effort-optional. Every so often he gets fired up and uses all his tools, but it's exceedingly rare. He's not really a guy you win with, you win in spite of him. |
