Well to each their own, and I completely disagree, Pettersson was pushing back against the check. He is a slight frail man boy, maybe he would be better suited for figure skating if he can’t take the physical contact of hockey without needing a protective goon squad.
- Makita

Yep. Not all agree on everything thankfully. I'm not saying send in the goon squad but send a goddamn message. Old school mentality or not if the league is going to allow their 'stars' to be abused then the product suffers. Game against the Leafs had massive upside now it's just another game. People who spent $800 for two seats in TO to see Petey play they don't matter?

If the physical contact is 'clean' Petey has shown he can handle it. But again this is the second 'takedown' of Pettersson this season of a questionable nature. He made it look good...but there was intent for sure IMO. It is what it is. Hopefully he isn't out long.

Clean hit. Head wasn't the principal point of contact and Petterson didn't get slashed on the hands. Sure the puck was 30 feet away, but it didn't go over the glass. Nothing the refs could call there really.

Priceless reactions to a freak accident play. Not a penelty. Love the kid but that's just a weird tied up fall.
Edit: ok, ok it was a 2 minute penelty.

The reaction I think is more about the continuation of the canucks passive , wussy nature. Was kotkaniemi trying to injure petey ? No of course not. Was he trying to abuse and intimidate our young star? Obviously yes he was. The issue.... injury aside for this fan base is we are sick and tired of the sedins model of turn the other cheek and let the refs punish the bad men. This team has played like a bunch of female doges pretty much since bertuzzi got strung up for punching a guy in the back of the head. This season is all about culture and learning to be a winning franchise... and I think a large portion of us see that if you're not willing to have one another's backs on the ice , then that's a real step in the wrong direction of you're stated team goals. Every interview you hear from these guys after an incident where a player is taken out is all about excuses. We didn't see it.... it was a hockey play...we had to keep our composure and try to win the game yadda yadda yadda. This team has won less hockey games then any other team in this league over the last five seasons.... yet is always at the top of the list for man games lost to injury. Simple question for me I guess is ... if the wins are what's so important to these guys , how many do they think that they will win if petey had his season come to an end last night?

Greens answer summed it up best:

'Didn't really see it but we're ok with the fact that we have lost 50% of our scoring on an intentful play'...'it wasn't malicious so we're good'.

But just like the Matheson takedown of Pettersson Green was 'really upset'...so the league I'm sure will sit up and take notice.

Are people not watching the same thing that I am? Sure Kotkaniemi could have got a hooking minor but after the hook, Petey initiates the contact. Just a freak accident, and hopefully he's okay. I like that Kotkaniemi went up to him as he was skating off to apologize.

I saw it the same way, but Pettersson initiated contact because Kotkaniemi got under his skin a bit. I personally think from a Gudbranson, Roussel, etc. perspective that you have a talk with anyone trying to throw their star player off his game like that.

That was what was disappointing to me, not the non-call on a borderline minor penalty

Absolutely. Not advocating goonery but a message needs to be sent in those instances whether it was penalty-worthy or not.

Anyone who has ever played rugby knows that it was a poor attempt at a flying leg tackle.

They got crossed up, then kotchy spins around and rotates his hips violently trying to embrace pettersson between his legs while his torso twists the opposite direction. This results in pettersson being violently thrown to the ground.

Typical mma move, here it is in gif form.

Granted in this gif it's landed a little higher then around his knees, but same body mechanics.

This league is a joke,

Star players new and old still get hit and hurt regularly. Thats never gonna change. Even the most extreme method; for example - The Bertuzzi way, where you end a guys career in retaliation for kneeing your captain, didn't stop people from hitting Naslund or the Sedins. Because you're always gonna have some (frank) head that comes into the league going '"I'm gonna make a name for myself or (frank) someone up" so What kinda talk or message has ever worked?

I know the results are mixed and Crosby went through the same ringer; but Pettersson is the entire team. He's who we all tune into watch, and some games its tough to watch him struggle to carry the team and fight through the entire opposition. For me, the symbolic gesture would have given me confidence that the team will be there when it really needs to be.

FWIW I would still have advocated for a response if the two bumped and carried on. The injury is insignificant to me, Pettersson felt he had to stand up for himself by stopping and giving Kotkaniemi a shot and I'd rather him feel like someone else will take care of those guys for him so he can continue focusing on lighting it up

The #Canucks have goalie problems as McKenna was just claimed by the Flyers. Utica is without a starting goalie. Stay tuned.
