9.5 seems a bit much, but if you have the Cap Space, I would imagine there are worse people to overspend on.

He also has never had the opportunity to play with a quality center. It could also be that he was misused in Carolina or simply that they didn't have the pieces to work with him, didn't you guys have him on the 3rd line for a lot of last season?

And looking at his goal totals, he scores between 25-35 per 82g. The only real outlier is the 2014-15 season where Carolina was 8th in the Metro and no one was scoring on the Canes.

he's a career 11% shooter, currently shooting 22% for the year. the math is pretty simple.

Yeah, he played kind of all over the place for most of his time here.

They tried him with Eric Staal but the two never really clicked. He had a couple concussions early on that set him back as well, but yeah, he rarely had an opportunity to play with a top end center.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good player. He'll net you 25-30 goals, but he's not a 50 goal scorer.

- BINGO!

Yeah, no one scores 50 anymore other than Ovie. I do think he can hit 35 or so with Jack, 25-30 is his regular career average, that's all I'm saying.

It's not like these are small sample sizes either. This is his 9th year in the league. His assist numbers are exactly where they've always been. The only difference this year is the puck is going in the net twice as often is it usually does for him.

Is he a 55goal 80 point player next year?

Seems he is a 50 goal scorer with a real center.

Ok, I'll double down:

How much is his playing with Jack boosting that percentage? Not having a legitimate distributing center to play with has to effect that drastically, correct?

No one thinks he'll score 50 for us repeatedly, but 35 or so is within reason. Change my mind if you would like.

Oh for sure, but is that worth $8.5 Million? That's 10% of the salary cap. And how much longer can he keep that up?

Small sample size.

If he's doing this 3 years from now you can hit me with something blunt but heavy.

Jeff Skinner's goal totals per year:

18
28
37
24
And currently on pace for 56...

Call me crazy, but I don't think signing a 27 year old with such wildly inconsistent numbers to a long term deal is a good idea. He's a very good player, but he's never had more than 63 points in a season.

I think some context is needed considering he’s played for a Canes team that has been struggling to create offense for a long time.

Who are you, Melnyk? That won't even cover the gas driving to and from practice every day.

2014-2015 - Second in goals, 5th in points on the team
2015-2016 - 1st in goals, 1st in points
2016-2017 - 1st in goals, 1st in points
2017-2018 - 2nd in goals, 4th in points

Again, not saying he's bad, just that he's not consistent and he's definitely not a 50 goal scorer.

How many years is that 8.5m? If it's max term, I trade him for a pretty penny at the TDL.

I think he's got 5 or 6 years left. I'd even do 8.5 if he'd take 5 years, but no way I'd go max term on that type of money given his age and concussion history. You're right.

9.5 for a Winger who hasn't scored 30+ goals on a consistent basis.....that would be just dumb

They keep talking about offer sheets, I just don't see it happening. Barely ever happens, seems like some kind of code of conduct that GMs have.

8.5 ceiling makes sense

- mgriffen

Big offer sheet coming for Auston Matthews from Arizona this off season!!! You know he wants to play where he grew up. The money's going to be so crazy Toronto will be in a REAL pickle

actually i think you're agreeing with me, because 35 goals is much closer to his traditional output, factoring a bump from playing with a guy like JE, and would take him much closer to his career SH%. so talking about numbers like $9.5 million for that production is absurd.

Ya, the same pickle the Flyers are in almost every single year trying to find a goalie since they had Ron Haxtall......
