I think you are being a little generous with both the coaching staff and Dubas. I would grade them both out at a “C”, which would be deemed just average. Babcock’s team frequently does not start on time, they are generally outworked and often outshot. All of which you have to link to coaching and preparation. Given the team speed and youth, this team should rarely be outworked, yet they are. Regarding Dubas, having Nylander miss such a large portion of the season and still giving him 7.5 million per season cannot be classified as a success. By most measures he is overpaid, and the fact a player like Guentzel who signs for 6mil per after Nylander signed is yet another solid example of the Leafs GMs misstep. Also moving Leivo for virtually nothing was also a poor choice. The leafs lack depth on Defence and Dubas has done nothing to address it. The leafs also lack physically to push back against a team like Boston in the playoffs, and again Dubas has not addressed that either. There is time for changes still, but as of now. Dubas and Babcock are no better that average.

What were you expecting for Leivo?

Other GM’s knew where he stood with the Leafs, especially with Nylander returning so Dubas didn’t have much leverage in trade talks.

Not to mention that Leivo himself isn’t the type of player every team wants to acquire. He’s not a top 6 player on a strong team, not that fast and can’t PK so that rules out a lot of playoff teams already. Non-playoff teams don’t want to trade picks or prospects for a project player either so Dubas had to resort to looking for a waiver exempt AHL prospect with a 3rd/4th like NHL ceiling at best.

Seriously though, remember before he went down with that shoulder injury? He was a friggin beast at the start of the season and on the puck all the time. Now, not so much... barely getting any shots... I know, I know, he has lots of points still, but you can see something is clearly going on with him. He is either: tired, injured, or disinterested...

It’s hockey. On a large sample size he’s been fantastic as been the team. It is never ever going to go perfect for anyone.

Even if they win the cup. They may get blown out 10-0 in game 1 and have another bad game after that but still win the series.
