Good article Todd, but I have a different opinion. I think they’re underachieving this season and have enough talent to be a playoff bubble team again this season. The fact that they have regressed considerably from last season makes me think the players are tuning him out. Hynes is a very intense guy and that gets old quick with players. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see Hynes being the coach of the Devils when this extension expires. |

No they're not tuning him out. Otherwise you wouldn't see games like in Dallas where they're able to battle back while missing their MVP player. It's simply a personnel issue. Team just isn't good enough yet. |

I hear what you’re saying, but I don’t think it’s tuning out Hynes that has led to a .900 team save percentage. The AHL level defense isn’t helping either. I think the team severely overachieved last year riding on Halls back. |

Where I disagree.
1. Ben Lovejoy over Steven Santini the past few years has set back Santini. Did Shero have a hand in that? Maybe. But Santini has gone backwards due to Hynes. Remember his first game? Took a roughing penalty on a good open ice hit (back when the Devils were pushed around more than now). Rest of game no Devils getting cheap shotted. Hynes praised his play post-game, but cut his ice time going forward.
2. Devils continue to get hosed on calls and Hynes argues a bit, but shrugs. Every once in a while, you need to pull a Robbie Ftorek and go nuts. You don't do it in a 2-1 game, but there have been opportunities when the Devils have been getting trounced. Sometimes you need to establish yourself with officials (This is universal in all sports).
3. There have been too many times I have read you and other web observers say the Devils mailed one in. Never acceptable. Teams mail in games when they are comfortable. If this team feels comfortable, that is on Hynes. There is no smarter, nicer coach, and fantastic hockey player than Larry Robinson. Everyone praises him as a HOF player, hockey mind and nice guy. Even he went ape poop (with memorable results) when needed.
An extension needs to be earned. Not saying Hynes needed to be fired. (Would not mind) but you do not reward mediocrity. ) A one-year rollover should have been the most he was given. |

AGREE,
DEVILS ARE A MIDDLE TEAM ROGHT NW WHAICH IS BETTER THAN A BTTOM FEEDER.
We trash them and often play very very well and totally take over games and periods against the upper teams in the league. Now with the top top teams ,we are lost as we dont have the fire power yet to compete here. Its coming be patient.
PLayers like HYNEs -you see fans ri him but never players.
He has their respect. Now easy in totys sport to receive respect as a coach coaching millionaires.
Prospects are coming ... better than last 10 years. https://lastwordonhockey....-jersey-devils-prospects/
Be petient........ root ......... and watch them develop. |

Very fair assessment. Shero has won the vast majority of his trades by a landslide. Especially if you ignore last years rental players. We suprised everyone last season when we got into the playoffs. Hynes certainly played a role in that. I think he is a sharp coach as well. This team is only missing a few pieces. 1 big minute D, a top 6 RW, and a true starting goalie (Blackwood may be the guy). Drives me nuts LJ still plays while sitting far better, and younger talent, but that is minor in the big picture. |

He has no help. It's amazing there is a team(s)worse than this. |

The good news (I guess) is if we continue this pace and pick 7-10 there’s a few good ones projected there. |

Ty Smith!!! Kid is on pace for 100 points in the WHL!!! Not sure who was the last WHL'er to do that from the blue line. Maybe take a stab at Erik Karlsson in the offseason. Not likely, but worth a try. Add kakko or Hughes in the draft, offer sheet to marner, and bam! New team overnight |

this is some good news. wonder if they should have given him the nine games to start the season. might have been able to play this year. |

He’s on a PPG pace at Harvard, I think he’s a sophomore though. Probably have to wait two more years for him. |

Let him play down the stretch. Would probably be better for him to see how fast the game is at the end of the year. Exciting prospect tho!!!! |
