The Coyotes are yet to win in 2019.

And it feels like about a year since they won a game.

It was back in the year 2018, December 29th to be exact, when the Old Coyotes bested the Ducks in overtime to eke out a 5-4 win.

Sure it's a lame dad joke, but it's pretty amazing how many heads it flew over.

The islanders are top half defensive team.

They are 21st in shots allowed per 60. If you think Robyn Lehner is seriously a .930 goalie, then by all means continue to think they are a great defensive team.

If you combined a great defensive team with a .930 goalie you'd be leading the NHL standings.

I think people are just so hyped up to call someone out for any kind of mistake they get crazy way too fast.

They rank 14th in shot attempts aginst. Now, they've been outshot on the year, but say they haven't improved is wrong. Classic Tanner, so sad.

I see quite a bit of the Islanders actually. I'm not sure why some random guys take on a team bugs you so much. I totally get that you want to cheer for your team, but objectively they aren't a good team.

They are the seventh worst possession team.

They are 28th in shots for per 60.

21st in shots allowed per 60.

They are third in the NHL in PDO.

But hey, if you think they are a good team, they must be right? You wouldn't be biased because they're your favorite or anything?

Like I said, every year there are teams that defy analytics to put up a decent record. It's fun while it lasts, but inevitably the GMs of these teams overrate what they have and it screws them up in the long term.

I hope it lasts and that the Islanders have a good season that their fans enjoy. God knows they've been screwed over enough.

I think your argumentation is flawed, James. If these are the metrics you are using to evaluate a teams quality, then you have to be consistent in doing so.
If we take a look at the last two and a half season, then Toronto is 16th in CF% and 2nd in PDO. That would make them an objectively bad/below average team according to your own argumentation. Washington is 20th in CF% and 1st in PDO in that same time frame.

If you look at the numbers, the best corsi teams tend to be among the worst in PDO. Intuitively this makes sense from a strategic standpoint. If your strategy is to shoot the puck at all times then you will have good possesion numbers but bad shooting%. The same argument can be used defensively. If you are playing a compact defensive structure that allows shotattempts from the outside and focusses on clearing the crease, then the result will be a bad CF% but a relatively good save%.
There are only a few elite teams with both high possesion numbers and a high PDO, but those teams are the very best in the league - Nashville and Tampa Bay.

My point is: Being a great possesion team doesn't necessarily make you a great team (Carolina) and having a great PDO doesn't necessarily make you a lucky team (Toronto, Washington).

By the way. I don't think Islanders is a top team yet and they will probably regress. However they are clearly a better team than you give them credit for.

You've got to account for rate stats because everyone has played different amounts of games, and you've got to look at only 5v5.

It's semantics. They haven't won the entire year. The year is only 6 days old.

6 days (now 7) does not equal and entire year. The year-to-date, yes.

That said, JT clearly knew what he was saying.

If you want to use PDO as a metric for luck then you have to compare the teams actual PDO to the expected PDO based on career S% and career save%. Even if you do this you can't really account for a coaching change though.

It requires a bit of work, but I have done the math for NYI:

Expected saves: 1134.728
Shots against: 1241 (there's 7 empty net goals that shouldn't count when looking at save%)
Expected save%: 0.914

Expected goals: 109.305
Shots: 1140
Expected shooting%: 0.096

Expected PDO: 1.010

It's all strengths by the way. I don't know where to find career S% (5v5) and career Save% (5v5)

That's currently my plan with syphilis.

So I feel it's a pretty good comparison...

The entire year is 7 days old. One could argue that "year" really means "season". How many times do we hear "that guy had a really good year!" they're not talking about calendar years, they're talking about seasons. Like I said, it's all word games. And it's dad joke central on top of it, like the insane people who say "see you next year!" when they mean "tomorrow".
