From what I've seen, he is a kid that can make plays at an extreme speed. Other then Macdavid that's not a skill very many guys have or have ever had. His vision and skill are off the charts and unlike those two guys you mentioned he loves the game and is a tireless worker. In todays no hit league...he's as close to can't miss star as you can have.

Having this speed factor and elite skating would be a fantastic complimentary piece for our big wingers such as Ratcliffe, Allison and Farabee if all pan out. Would create a lot of space for them

Depends on what you value more. Hughes definitely has the higher ceiling but Kappo imo is more likely to be a solid NHL player. I think Hughes is hit or miss. If he adds more tools to his speed its a no brainer. But if he doesnt he is another Alexander Daigle/Yakupov.

Yeah that's a no for me chief. Hughes skating and vision alone make him better than those guys. He may suck at defense. He may turn the puck over at times. And he may initially make some plays thst cant be done at the NHL level. But he will be exciting. He will play fast. And he will help the team score points.

Hughes is the top overall pick in this draft. Idk that he will ever be a superstar but hes the best player here.

I get the frustration but I'm in the "they're not that far away" camp. I feel like one or two good players can make a huge difference in this team. Concerned that JVR is a miss - great hands but no speed or d is a luxury for more skilled teams. They don't backcheck and they don't move their feet, so they don't create space for themselves or remove it from their opponents. Coots get tied up on that backdoor opportunity, but doesn't tie up his guy on the Blues goal - and he's our defensive center. Why does this team not mark in the defensive zone? When they do (like TK the other night preventing that goal) its a revelation. This is simple fundamentals, stuff they have to know at this point, brutal.

Not sure what's going on but they're played last night like a team that has figured out they're out of the playoff race and that player and coaching changes are coming.

I agree, if the only thing good about Hughes was just his skating I would still take him #1. His skating is so good that is all people want to talk about so others think he is a 1 trick pony. I have a feeling LA is going to end up getting him and all you will hear about next year is Hughes Vs McDavid and Hughes Vs Hughes.

OMG Hughes AND Kane on the same line? Not enough pucks to go around plus I feel sorry for the camera man having to keep up with that.

Add in the slight possibility of Panarin signing this summer there too and that would be one hell of a line

This is the major issue IMO. There are no role players. No defensive specialists, no grinders, and too many slow guys that rely on someone else to setup a play, ie JVR, Simmonds, Patrick, and Couturier.

Well Couts is defensive specialist but your asking him to be a #1 center.

I mean seriously JVR-Weal-Simmonds... its a black hole of defensive and perimeter play.

- youarewrong

Yes, right now they are asking too much of Couturier, Giroux and Provorov. If the roles are adequately filled, those guys will be better.

Patrick was being asked to do more than his development had indicated as well.

Of the bottom 10 teams Chicago flyers rangers Detroit are the biggest Money makers. If they were going to "rig" the lottery I have to imagine it would be for one those 4 teams

Lose for Hughes

Sad, but that is what this season has boiled down to.

I disagree about Provorov. He isn't being asked to score 17 goals or dominate the ice, just stop making stupid unforced mistakes. If Hagg made half of the mistakes of Provorov this year he would of been waived and never see an NHL game again.

It's getting so bad that I really am starting to think he has to be doing it on purpose, no one has that bad of luck.

Not sure why people are so timid about Hughes. Not sure if it is because he is American and the Flyers have drafted "enough" already so no one wants another. Maybe Flyer fans are scared of getting burned because previous years they have drafted players who are taking longer to develop then some taken after.

Don't get me wrong, but I would take Kakko in a heartbeat and be thrilled if he became a Flyer. Although if I have a choice between Hughes and Kakko...Kakko who?

Hughes is not just fast, but he has elite skating only McDavid could be put in the conversation with. McDavid no doubt has way better top end speed, but when it comes to overall skating and edgework Hughes is better. That's not even mentioning his other high end skills.

The most common thing I have been seeing about Hughes is he is small. The kid is 17 and bigger than Patrick Kane, Gaudreau and Marner. Having another small forward is not an issue for the Flyers, it is actually the opposite. The Flyers have too many big, slow and sloppy players already which is a big reason they are getting crushed this year. Does Hughes have questions about his defensive commitment or hogging the puck too much, yes, but do the Flyers have anyone on their team or in their system with true elite offensive potential? He would easily become the best offensive player on the Flyers game 1 of next season just a tiny bit behind Giroux from the get go. No 3 year development program, kid will be in the NHL next year.

- Glak18

I am in no way shape or form suggesting passing on Hughes if the flyers are at #1. you take the best available no matter what. I am just saying I am intrigued by Kakko.

I wasn't referring to rigging the lottery, I just think LA wins it. On the other hand now that you mention the NHL playing around...LA would probably be #2 behind Arizona on who Bettman would want Hughes to go to.

Wow, what a weird name coincidence (it's not like a common name like "Smith" or "Taylor" or something like that)....if you follow the Phils, I'm sure you've heard of this guy:

At first I was convinced Provy was hurt, then I thought maybe it was mental (stress, distractions, who knows) then I thought you know he is only 21...what is his usage? Here was one of the articles I read.

It's confidence related and thinking the game too much instead of just playing. Can see the same thing with Gostisbehere.

one look at Johnny hockey is why I would not pass on a player for size despite my concern. My comment wasn't meant to say I would pass on him for size so if it looked that way I didn't word it well. I will say if two players are completely equal i would go for the size but from what i have read Hughes seems to be the clear cut #1.

I talked about it repeatedly. Last season the Flyers were able to mix in different matchups and use Provorov and Gostisbehere in a different mix of matchups. All last year all the "expert analytic" posters told me how wrong I was about how Filppula helped the team last season and how he was a garbage player. The Flyers were able to use the Couturier/Giroux line more last season along with Provorov/Gostisbehere is more offensive situations than this season.

Just one time it would be awesome to get a top pick and be able to say "he is going to be a superstar"
