Carol Schram: Pettersson's Calder chances, Quinn Hughes timing and Boeser for Last Man In
With Elias Pettersson now on injured reserve for the second time this season, Elliotte Friedman muses on how much time he can miss and still remain the Calder Trophy favourite, plus thoughts on Quinn Hughes, Brock Boeser's All-Star chances and parity at World Juniors. - Carol Schram
Thanks Carol
as long as EP40 plays about 2/3 of the games he should be okay.
I check the trade tracker almost everyday, tdl can't come soon enough
mixed feeling about trying to sign Quinn to play at the end of the season, on the one hand it shows the club is committed to getting these guys into the lineup right away and I guess they will get signing bonuses or whatever too, but asset management is important with the expansion draft. |

Carol, isn’t Quinn exempt from the expansion draft as long as he doesn’t exceed 10 pro games this year? |

the 9 games is only in regards to the ELC. Quinn (I believe) isn't eligible to be claimed in the expansion draft even if he suited up and played the remaining games of the season as a Canuck. |

I think he'd need to be protected if he signs at any point this year.
https://www.nhl.com/news/...ghts-followed/c-302586918
The relevant clause:
* All first- and second-year NHL players, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward protection limits).
If he signs this year he'll have three seasons played by the time the expansion draft comes:
2018-19 (this year)
2019-20
2020-21
Expansion draft June 2021, for play to start in October 2021.
If Seattle had started in 2020 as originally planned, everything would have been fine. |

I think it has something to do with his age...beich and Burke had a back and forth on Twitter and they concluded he is exempt. Can’t seem to find the reasoning. I’ll try and answer my own question this afternoon. But thx Carol!
Edit: you may be correct. I just keep reading contradicting opinions |

This was a quote from the last expansion draft.
"A year of professional experience is 10 professional games played under a NHL contract, including regular season and playoffs. For players who are aged 18 or 19* (on Sept. 15th of a given season), those specifically have to be NHL games. Everybody else it can be any league, as long as it’s under an NHL contract.
*The exception is a “19-year-old” player who turns 20 between September 16th and December 31st, and signed their first contract that same calendar year. For those players all games under an NHL contract count, no matter what league." |

I was also going from that CBA battle between Biech and Robinson. Biech seems to think he is protected no matter what, and Robinson saying he will need protecting. Either way, hopefully he won't need to be protected. |

Cool. I hadn't seen that before.
Quinn turned 19 on October 14, 2018, so he would be officially "18" this year season.
If this is right, then he'd lose exemption if he plays 10 NHL games this year, right?

Bo does, he is tasked with the Herculean task of trying to pump up Goldobin. |

i think it all comes down to GP pro this year.
Michigan doesn't seemed destined for a long run in the playoffs so if Quinn signs the second his regular season is over, March 2, he'll be eligible to play 17 games so.
I think the age thing would make a difference if he didn't seem on track to reach such a high GP total this year. |

My reading of that is that as a “18” he can play games in Utica without it going against that 10 |

Per Ryan Biech:
"The threshold is 11 games due to his waiver age when signing the deal". So essentially, if he DOES play 10 games this season, he will have to be protected in 2021 from the Seattle Expansion draft. |

I don't think he'll see any ice in Utica this year or he would've signed at camp.
And he'll have a window of 17 Canucks games between his college regular season ending and his NHL season ending.
Basically unless Michigan makes the Frozen Four he should be able to crack 10 GP this year. |

AHL is still considered Pro I believe. I am not 100% sure though. I am not super familiar with this CBA stuff |
