I wouldnt trade Johnnson for Muzzin. I dont love Muzzin enough. - Archaic
The numbers suggest he’s good. Easily a number 3 d man.
I think you’d be crazy not to make that trade. If it was one for one. LA would laugh. |

I disagree with you.
I think it would be very silly for the Leafs to waste the last time they have deadline cap space on standing pat.
There are plenty of options available. More than usual...it’s a big UFA year.
There’s really no excuse. They have a big advantage by not having to send salary back or having the other team retain. - Santo_44
There are pieces available, yes, but what does it take to get them? You can't overpay just for the sake of making a trade.
They don't have to send salary back? How about Zaitsev? |

It takes what it takes to get them every year....maybe even less due to it being a buyers market this year.
And nope. They have about 24 million in deadline cap space. The caps have 500k...yeah. They are using their advantage over their competitors. |

24 Million *this year*. As the trolls like to remind us, next year will be different. They can't trade for a huge contract, unless it's a rental. |

Connor Brown for Darnell Nurse would be a good deal too, and it's likely to happen, because Chiarelli recently traded for 17 bottom pairing defensemen.. |

they also need to keep some of that cap space for bonus $$ to be paid out if player make the grade. Say if Matthews make $2 mil in bonus $$. it needs to be applied to this year cap and not next season cap. |

Exactly - you can never spend to the cap. Plus they would like to retain some space for a possible future addition. |

The Leafs need a RHD. If the Leafs acquire Muzzin where do you put Gardiner? 3rd pairing? Do you experiment Jake on the right side (ugh)? |

just for good measures, add Gardiner and Puljujärvi.

In that case you put Dermott or Rielly on the RS. Then next year Muzzin slides into Jakes spot.
RHD is preferable but there aren’t many that are truly available. |

Why Puljujarvi? Gotta be at least one forward on Edmonton that's better than him |

Muzzin is at 4 million....far from a big contract. He’s basically as good as Gardiner but will be 3 million cheaper next year. |

I don’t think EDM even thinks about that.

Not advocating for Muzzin, but Nurse is a LHD as well.. If you get a LHD, without trading Gardiner, you can still make it work on D.
We need to upgrade on Hainsey, Zaitsev, and Ozhi.. All three of them can't seem to make a decent first pass.

I don't think it makes sense to have Jake playing on the 3rd pair this year.
How do we know RHD aren't available? e.g. Any one of Faulk/Pesce/Hamilton could potentially be moved. |

. . . just to add to that. They had 1 power play, and each of PP1 and PP2 had about 40 seconds, before the last 40 seconds saw Matthews out with PP1 again. The first 80 seconds were uneventful and disorganized. |

He doesn’t need to. Dermott could slide over or Rielly.
And sure they could be. They likely will cost more however.
Probably can’t get away without giving up Kapanen. |
