Nah. Brind'amour retired before Jeff was drafted and didn't join the coaching staff until Jeff's 2nd year.
Basically their narrative on the whole thing was that because Jeff came in and was the most marketable star they had, he was never benched or called out on his on ice habits.

It was kind of weird, because Skinner had kind of became "The Guy" almost overnight. He was an instant superstar in his rookie year. Hell, he was in Seventeen magazine. They were calling him "Hockey Bieber."
And then... he... well, he didn't really get better. He didn't get worse, but he didn't get better. Year after year after year you got the same guy, the same plays, the same mistakes.
He was always very good, but as Rutherford slowly eroded the team around him in a desperate attempt to make the playoffs, he started to become the face of unfulfilled promise in Carolina.
Then came a committed rebuild under Francis, and Jeff wasn't having fun anymore. Still productive, but there were newer, shinier guys coming, and Jeff was still Jeff.
It wasn't so much anything to do with who Skinner was, or how he played, but more about what he represented. Right or wrong, he was the one piece that was consistent across 8 years of missed playoffs or failed seasons, and as the most prominent face on the team during that entire stretch, he came to be a symbol of it.

I think Housley would bristle at Botterill coming in and saying "give Pominville 12 and a half minutes a night", and he would be totally justified. Somehow, even though I never hear his name, I thought Pominville would get more than the 2nd fewest minutes on the team.

Then it's not really about just first round picks, is it? It's about top 6 picks, and that's a whole different ball of wax. Teams that suck and know they suck, generally, looking at you Ottawa, don't just give up an almost certain top 5 pick.

Pommer is the long time respected employee who's given the company his all.
Pommer went years without calling in sick or missing work.
Just slowly let him work less and maybe manage the other employees around the office.
