The second. Because that was the message that everyone was trying to push. I don't like it, but that was the narrative the organization was running and they had just spent a week or two talking about how Jeff hadn't been held accountable when he was younger, so there we are.
They were already too far down that path. It wasn't anything new at that point. - BINGO!
Wasn't Rod the captain during Skinner's rookie year? That would have fallen under his purview
I mean you’d be awfully foolish to think they won’t bring in players with talent that don’t fit their exact mold. - Stripes77
When has shady gotten in an argument with a teammate (QB)? Left a game at Halftime? or refused to practice?
And of course they would bring someone in that might have issues, but no way they are bring in AB.
"It's not you, really, it's me. I've had a really nice time, and I wish I felt like I was in a place to continue this. But I'm an emotional cripple, and I just don't think I'm in a place where I can make a commitment like the one you deserve." - Der Kaiser

Nah. Brind'amour retired before Jeff was drafted and didn't join the coaching staff until Jeff's 2nd year.
Basically their narrative on the whole thing was that because Jeff came in and was the most marketable star they had, he was never benched or called out on his on ice habits.

Oh, ok. I'm sure it all trickles down from the owner. He seems to have a wild style

they will sign a vet WR, hopefully someone pretty good (personally I'd like to see them get 2 guys). draft another WR somewhere in the 2-4th range. - gordong

It was kind of weird, because Skinner had kind of became "The Guy" almost overnight. He was an instant superstar in his rookie year. Hell, he was in Seventeen magazine. They were calling him "Hockey Bieber."
And then... he... well, he didn't really get better. He didn't get worse, but he didn't get better. Year after year after year you got the same guy, the same plays, the same mistakes.
He was always very good, but as Rutherford slowly eroded the team around him in a desperate attempt to make the playoffs, he started to become the face of unfulfilled promise in Carolina.
Then came a committed rebuild under Francis, and Jeff wasn't having fun anymore. Still productive, but there were newer, shinier guys coming, and Jeff was still Jeff.
It wasn't so much anything to do with who Skinner was, or how he played, but more about what he represented. Right or wrong, he was the one piece that was consistent across 8 years of missed playoffs or failed seasons, and as the most prominent face on the team during that entire stretch, he came to be a symbol of it.
I’m young enough to be the son of most of the posters on here sans Gerbe. Used to come here for rumours only and to lurk but it’s hard to find fellow Sabre fans to talk to in the heart of leafs nation. Not depressed, but addicted to all things sports but I guess it’s better then being addicted to other things - Pegullaville
If I'd been addicted to hookers instead over the last 10 years at least I'd get some pleasure...
you have spoiled at least as much fun as i have in one way or another. - Sabresfan-365
To be fair, he didn't come in here late in the 10th game of the winning streak in which the Sabres let the lead get away from them and say something along the lines of "well they were never going to win the rest anyway". That's the nuts in a hand of wetblanket poker.
How important is keeping a first-round pick? Well, consider that 20 of the 23 scoring champions since the undrafted Wayne Gretzky won his last Art Ross in 1993-94 were selected in the first round. Of those 20, only one was drafted after sixth overall, and that was Calgary’s Jarome Iginla, whom Dallas selected 11th overall in 1995.
Pommer is a +5 and has 18 points.
Sure, he hasnt produced without eichel or in the last 20 games. You know if we make the playoffs, he will have something to teach the kids. Lockerroom stuff, we have a really inexperienced team.
How many former players that are now GM's have relationships/friendships with current players?
Might be silly, but I find it hard to believe that pommer and jbotts have the standard player/gm relationship
Wouldnt you give big mike, or either steve a different set of rules, if they worked for you?
Your right about okposo. He blows. - Boss34
I think Housley would bristle at Botterill coming in and saying "give Pominville 12 and a half minutes a night", and he would be totally justified. Somehow, even though I never hear his name, I thought Pominville would get more than the 2nd fewest minutes on the team.

Then it's not really about just first round picks, is it? It's about top 6 picks, and that's a whole different ball of wax. Teams that suck and know they suck, generally, looking at you Ottawa, don't just give up an almost certain top 5 pick.

Pommer is the long time respected employee who's given the company his all.
Pommer went years without calling in sick or missing work.
Just slowly let him work less and maybe manage the other employees around the office.
Show jimmy the copy machine and how it works best
When you need a boost around the busy time of the year, have him hustle sales again. No need to wear him down.
Pommer won't be nervous about the big sales pitch. He'll be ready.
