Anyone who thinks overpaying for 4th liners is the way to win a cup but thinks paying market value for a generational talent isn't, is an idiot. |

I think if they make no moves, they can hold fast to the 4-5-6 spot in the division. But trying to get 48 or 50 of a possible 72 points is a reach. - 1970vintage
Reaching for the playoffs is stupid, I don't think they, the management group, collectively, would do that. Sell mode should be kicking in come mid February. |

It would suck for the veteran guys to see the GM "give up" on the season, but it would also be an opportunity to give Demko a run of starts, to see Zach Mac get a few games, to bring Hughes in at the end of the year with no pressure. |

What happened in here yesterday? Why is race being brought into the conversation?
We can poke fun at our flawed personalities (god knows there is a lot of material there) but let’s not start playing that old tired American pastime of “my race is better than your race”. - bloatedmosquito

1: one has nothing to do with the other
2: i dont recall anyone saying overpaying for 4th liners was a sureproof way of getting a cup
3: paying market value for EK was never the topic of discussion here, paying market value for Erik Karlsson given the current state of the canucks and does Erik Karlsson give the Canucks a legitimate chance at the cup during his contract, that was the discussion. |

Vintsy made this exact argument/statement a page earlier. If he gets you a cup in say year 3, which to me is far fetched, but regardless, would it matter in years 4 through 7. The answer to me is no, you dont care what happens if he brings you a cup. My point is, its a stretch to think that the canucks miraculously expedite their rebuild from bottom 5 or 7 in the league to cup champions based off of an Erik Karlsson signing and does his "prime years" really give this team a legimate shot at the cup for the canucks in the next 3 years, and i personally dont think he alone does that. - Codes1087
No, alone he probably doesn't bring you a cup but normal hockey operations don't stop because you sign EK. |

Speaking of Erik Karlsson signing here
For the people that are against it. The goal is to win the Stanley Cup. EK get's you a heck of a lot closer to a cup.
A lot of people over time have said they don't care that Chicago and LA are now completely screwed because they won cups.
Signing Karlsson may put Van into cap troubles in the later part of his contract but would that really matter if he gets you a cup? - manvanfan
Probably one of your worst posts in a long time and that is quite a feat. |

Canucks have 36 games remaining.
Canucks have 45 points.
Canucks need at least 93 points to make the playoffs, maybe more.
Canucks would need to go (something like) 22-10-4 over the remainder of the season to accomplish that.
Canucks are not a bubble team.
Canucks should get ahead of the market and move players they are moving on from sooner than the deadline. - 1970vintage

No you're right, normal hockey operations doesn't stop, but youre entire direction as a hockey op does. Your entire philosphy and how you go into trades/rebuild/drafting/etc does. |

Wasting a 26 overall pick on career AHLer Gaunch...even better. - LordHumungous
Pettersson> hughes > OJ >horvat > Gaunce > McCain > Shinkaruk > Jenson
Each player could move up or down one spot but that's how id rank our past 1st rounders. For a late 1st round pick Gaunce has exceeded his statistical expectations. |

Trades possibly.
Rebuild, well it's going to end at some point. Rebuild's that never end like the Oilers/Flyers are not something I feel like entertaining.
Drafting is as JB said what you are looking at 3-4 years down the road for the players. Not a huge barring on what the team is doing immediately.

I really hope Canucks go for Dougie Hamilton. Yes he is a bible thumper but come on this is the Canucks . This team is built on choir boys. Aside from MDZ and Jake there are no party animals.
He is 25 yrs old 6'6 RHD and puts up solid points every year . Two years left at 5.75 per. That is what you should be looking at not 7 years of EK. - VANTEL
EK as a UFA vs Dougie at what cost? |

Karlsson and Hamilton represent the exact same situation. Except one will be free and the other is not. |

Hamilton has been a cancer in all his rooms, karlson has been a leader.
We aren't winning a cup in the next 2 years so why would Hamilton's current cap hit be a concern. We'd need to resign him to get him in our window. Sp we'd pay the same cap hit and lose valuable assets. No thanks.

honestly guys, despite the fact that this whole "racist/race" debate is going pretty civil, for the sanctity of the blog, and out of respect for Carol, can we please just end it with that. I can say as a visible minority, and as someone with a gay brother (as PC as one can be), I can say that I am not offended, nor do I feel that anyone here is racist/homophobic/xenophobic/ihatetheworldphobic. Lets please move on |

Agreed debates are debates. Engage or stay out. Contribute in a mature manner and all is usually good. Problem is we have some maturity issues in the thread lol - LordHumungous
this. This blog isn't limited to only hockey talk, but the maturity and how things tend to lean more personal than it is fact/opinion driven is what takes away from it. |

I was thinking that "Dumb" is a player i've never heard of from the draft?
Also, What if Van trades Tanev, Granlund to Pittsburgh for Maata, Brassard and Pitt's 1st. Then you can trade Brassard to someone else for a bit more. |
