I honestly didn't expect this team to be anywhere near a playoff spot, but so many struggling/bad teams have kept them close.

I understand the philosophy of tankers, but don't necessarily agree with them.
You take a look at the top 5 teams in the West, Jets Preds Flames Sharks and Knights and see how many top 5 picks those teams have had and it just proves that there are many different ways to build a contender.

I still think the Oilers will and would love to see the battle of Alberta.

But really it's the Jets in the west.

Flames might win a round but if they 'go for it' and add a couple serious TDL acquisitions they may make the conference finals but doubtful.

the jets are a different story in the fact that alot of the sucking years were done in atlanta , the preds built over time but without some savey trades like forsberg/johansson they would not be contending, sharks are a model of consistency and failure at the same time , and the Knight are a 1 off in a system never used before, the Canucks with the realization that Pedderson is a legit player have now escalated their timeline and must make moves to make the best of it.
the mantra of 3 away from 3 is stupid and near sighted , we do not need to wait for Horvat to be 27 to contend and the rapid drop off of teams like the Ducks/kings show that every year is THE year !

A few teams that have had this illustrious top 5 picks, that have gone nowhere, Islanders, Panthers, Flyers and Oilers. I am sure there are more but those are off the top of my head.
It is not always about where you draft, it is about how you draft.

They have a tough slate of teams through Feb-March but also are +7 on home games vs road games to close the year.

Banking points in January is their best hope as once the schedule gets busy again they'll be forced to play Demko and he could just as easily go .915 as he could go .870. We also know the ups and downs of Markstrom.

That final spot could easily come down to which of the teams bumble(frank)ing around that last spot goes on a heater first.
