That player would be at least 3 years away then as there are no stars in this draft. Add to that the team is getting better, so the likelihood of drafting high enough to get a star is decreasing exponentially by the day. No, I think we need to accept that the stars we have is it until the next rebuild.

We're just going to get another Gaunce picking at 24ov so we may as well just trade the pick.

No Pettersson...will be taking the Oil on the betting line.

Plus Lucic and Kassian are heating up.

Are they the two ugliest men in hockey right now?

I agree, that’s how things should be. But the point was if there are no “stars” in this draft, and they need one more star to play with Horvat, they will have to wait until the 2020 draft, plus 2 years, making it 3 in total. Add in that next season you would hope would be better than this season and the likelihood of getting a “star” lower in the draft goes down further...
- 1970vintage

i see your point. Given that Hughes is the likely candidate to be the newcomer rookie on the team next year, it gives little hope that someone will surprise and become Horvats new winger essentially? I think the only current prospect that could maybe fill that would be MacEwen, as he is having a tremendous year in Utica.

He projects more as a middle/bottom 6 guy though. You hope Dehlen or Lind could eventually be that guy, but if we’re waiting to draft another star player, it could be a very long time...

At least we've signed a starting goalie for the comets.

if their current season is any indication of graduating next year, we might be dissapointed. From the look/sounds of it, they might need to marinate a couple more years down there.

Why would he be three years away? Pettersson, who no one knew was a star is lighting it up in his first year which is only a year after he was drafted 5th.

Sean Monahan was 6th and he’s now a star but he scored 20 as an 18 year old.

We have no idea if there’s a star in the draft, I would bet allot of money there is but just because he doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb doesn’t mean he isn’t there.

Because this draft (2019) the Canucks will be selecting 10th ish, and there are no stars (if you disagree with this, take it up with Don). Next year, the Canucks will be drafting lower, say 15th ish, and the chance of getting an impact player capable of making the jump to the NHL in their D+2 season is low.

not disputing that having picks of players outside the top 10 picks in the draft making an impact in their draft +2 season is low, but to play devils advocate, our current roster depth is trash (not to say that they will automatically be here in 2 years time either). Replacing them might not be as hard as we might think. For example, if Granlund is here in 2 years, would it be super far fetched to think any kid has a legit shot at replacing him?

There will always be a few stars every draft...it’s just less obvious this year who those players will be. Not super high on Hughes, some people are

But that would be a “depth” move, we’re talking “star” power. If you are looking for an impact winger to play with Horvat in the next two years where is said player coming from?

Yeah, just poking fun at your comment about stars.

Hopefully they get a solid top 6 winger in the first round this year.

What would Edmonton need to add to make this work?

Goldobin 4th in team Scoring
Puljujarvi 16th in team scoring, on a team that can’t score...
