It's a trade with each team dealing a different position forward that is producing below what's expected, especially in the case of Rask for this season. Both he and Niederreiter are about the same age, and are as close to equal in Average Points per Regular Season Game for their careers, with Niederreiter at age 26 (1 year older than Rask), however, having played in 159 more R.S. games.

Rask (Center): 339 GMPL. - 63-G & 100-A (163 Pts.) - (Avg. 0.48 Pts./Game)
Niederreiter (RW): 498 GMPL - 112-G & 119-A (231 Pts) - (Avg 0.46 Pts./Gm)

However, despite both players signed through 2021/22, Rask has a $4M cap hit, while Niederreiter's is $5.25M, giving the Wild $1.25M in extra cap space to further improve their roster by the deadline while currently in contrast, in a "win now" mode as opposed to the Canes.
The Wild's loss of Dumba having undergone surgery, has in part limited particularly their team's offensive play all around. In having only minimal cap space, they will likely make another similar cost saving move or more in order to in succession, bring in for one spot, sufficient help for their back line to replace some of Dumba's lost offensive contributions while still in a "win now" situation.
