Interesting stat IMO
Since 2016-17 (last 2 1/2 years) at 5 on 5
Goals
Risto 10
McCabe - 6
Primary assists
Ristolainen- 15
McCabe 14
Total points
Ristolainen - 44
McCabe - 34
Not that big of a difference, until you see the minutes played in that span
Risto - 3727
McCabe 2804
900 more minutes and just 10 more 5 on 5 points
With Dahlin and Pilut, I’m not sure Risto is even the third best offensive D man we have.
Regardless of opinion on him. We should sell high - sbroads24
I am not counting on Pilut that much yet, but I wonder what the numbers look like at even strength instead of just 5 on 5, as I feel like even strength truly is the bulk of the play during games. |

I think it's a myth that he plays better with fewer minutes. - Lunaion
How is there a sample size large enough of his play at reduced minutes to know that? |

Just my opinion. He's played reduced minutes much of this year, and I see the same player. I'll never question his athleticism or conditioning.

Problem is though is that would include all of Risto’s 3 on 3 time that McCabe never gets.
5 on 5 is really their only even playing field |

This is where I disagree with you:
You discount PP and 3-on-3 stats as though anyone who plays it is guaranteed to perform and produce points. He-who-shall-not-be-named really wasn't replaced on the power play. Other people have gotten more time, but they aren't as good |

They count, but how can you compare two players when only one person gets that time?
If Jake McCabe can score and pass just as good as Risto 5 on 5, why exactly couldn’t he cycle the puck on the PP like 55 does?
Both of them play the majority of their time 5 on 5. That’s where you compare them |

I admit you did. Slow night tonight. Was watching the replay of the game. Seems the lines show promise in spurts . slacking at times and the line changes, then it's on fire . and then it's ho hum |

Dahlin is unreal at 18. We have a generational player.
And here’s another example of where Ristolainen is below average - sbroads24
Imagine a Dahlin-Karlsson pairing. That would be insane. |

Because equal playing time doesn't mean they'll get the same amount of production. You can't throw e-rod in Eichel's PP spot and assume they'll produce at the same rate, and you can't assume that McCabe will produce the same as Risto on the PP. Risto is actually good at it |

Right, and Eichel blows Erod out of the water 5 on 5 too. So I don’t get that point?
My point is maybe McCabe could play the PP, and be just fine |

Use the draft picks this year. Rid yourself of the deadweight, then make that kind of decision next season. Like you said, Murray moved to fast. It’s not that the ROR trade was terrible, it was just a year early. If Murray takes another year to asses what we have then we possibly have Eichel-Matthews/Dubois-ROR down the middle right now. Or Laine/Tkchuck on Eichel’s wing. - Pegullaville
And won’t have dahlin on the team |

Dahlin replaced that other guy on the PP. He's better.
3v3 shows Risto's strengths and weaknesses very well. He's flat out won us some games, and flat out lost us some games. He's never boring. McCabe probably would be. He doesn't skate nearly as well.

That’s the only positive. Hence why I hope we miss the playoffs this year and sink closer to a top 10 pick. If we pick twice in the top 15 and have another late first in a pretty good draft then we can really set ourselves up well. |

I’m no wizard at reading these graphs but I’m pretty sure the “average” you're referring to on that graph is the average offensive zone entries for forwards. That’s the line depicted in the graph.
When I isolated for Dmen on Buffalo, Winnipeg, and Nashville, Risto is better than everyone other than Roman Josi, Dahlin, Dustin Byfuglien, and Matthias Ekholm.
So at least insofar as entries go, this chart says Risto is superior to Trouba, Morrissey, Yannick Weber, Ryan Ellis, PK Subban, and Tyler Myers.
The area where Dahlin exceeds forward average is in carry in percentage. He is far below forward average in Entries/60.
But maybe I’m reading the chart wrong. Maybe.
