Panarin, Karlsson, edler(NMC), virtanen, OJ are also players that will need to be protected. That's 6 forwards. I wouldn't protect Gaudette myself. - Pres.cup

If he can still play the game he's playing now and is willing to take a discount I would argue he's exactly the type of guy to help this team once they're in playoff competition - NorthNuck
Or you can get rid of him now and find a guy that's younger that will help the team for longer |

The Canucks Payroll and their Cap Usage are two different numbers. Not disagreeing with the “savings”, just pointing out another layer.
I would also say that spending less doesn’t equate to saving if you aren’t getting value for the dollars you are spending. Buying a pair of shoes for $100 that are 50% off sounds like a great savings but if they give you blisters every time you wear them is it really a good deal? - 1970vintage
True.... what is eriksson's actual salary this year? I believe it's more then 6m. Plus I don't think insurance covers signing bonuses, he had it mostly right, semantics aside. |

Tanev is being saved to play with Hughes. Plus he is loyal to the org so as long as his body holds up he can be signed to another team-friendly contract when his current one is up - NorthNuck
I don’t know that $4whatever million for a 10point dman is team friendly. Intangibles i guess... |

Yeah, wasn’t disagreeing. Canucks are spending less than the cap ceiling, therefore saving the owner money. But savings are a gray area when you consider what they actually spent the money on (which I think was what Lefty was trying to say about not buying free agents) |

The number of games this year that he has kept us in by making some key poke checks or shot blocks is pretty impressive imo. People forget about him breaking up 2 on 1s regularly when Peteys out there sniping goals |

Just saying that “defensive defensemen” don’t tend to get big dollar contracts as UFA’s on a regular basis. So, if Tanev re-ups after next year, presumably at a number above what he makes now, I’m not sure that number would be “team friendly”. |

I agree. I don't think Tanev will get a large amount like 7-8 mil but you need players like him. If he can still play the way he does now and you can get him for under 6 mil I'd do it. |

more like he's the only trade bait along with Sutter who would actually bring in a good return.
And we see Edler mentioned more because Sutter could still be moved at the draft since he has term left.
it's Canuck fans only hope at acquiring an extra 1st or 2nd so of course they'll cling onto it. |

If you truly want inner peace as a Canuck fan, it's better to just accept that Edler will be re-signed to a 3 or 4 year contracts with a full NTC. Sutter will also still be a Canuck after the TDL.
Realistically, we can hope that perhaps Benning listens to offers on Sutter at the draft and is open to trading him for a winger or pick/prospect. |

my biggest want is trading Gudbranson back to Tallon while he is still employed. I think Tallon likes him, Florida writers continue to say that the decline has been since Gudbranson left (and not because of smith or marsechault, hilarious actually). For argument sake, say they trade Gudbranson to Florida, for rumored on-the-block Pysyk, and a pick or two, the Canucks continue the trend of acquiring assets for players who make the team worse (debateable with gudbranson, but pretty clear cut with MDZ and Nilsson) |

It's highly unlikely, I agree.
Semi off-topic, but I do find it at least a little bit funny that people are scoffing at the idea of a rebuilding team sitting at 11th in the conference in point percentage deciding to trade away a veteran everyday roster player for a younger asset. |

not sure who had Markstrom as the starter, but it looks to be Demko starting instead. |

That would be an interesting move by Jimbo. It would satisfy a lot of Benning's critics, but I feel like it would upset a decent amount of his supporters(I feel like a lot of Benning supporters are also EG fans).
I'm mostly holding out hope for a Sutter draft day trade, I think Benning still likes Gudbranson(even more so than Green). |

the recent "additions by subtraction" that JB has done has really been nice. 6th and 7th rounders may not seem significant, but acquiring those by shedding fat in Nilsson and MDZ are pretty decent rewards for cutting loose bad players. I am hoping he can continue to make these sorts of moves. - Codes1087

I have been known to be one of Gudbransons biggest critics, and have gone on to say that there was a period in this season where he has looked his absolutely best, but I still think he is a bottom pairing at best defender. Like you said, you hope for more trades that like Sutter or Gudbranson, but don't really expect it, or shouldn't expect it. |
