I was on the wait and see train this past off-season with Johnson. And no he constantly goes out of position it's like Bad. Not quite as bad as hunwick but damn close. - 668710
Ditto. I mean, everybody knew it was an awful contract, but I wanted to see for myself since I don't watch a ton of Cbus games. Dude is plain awful most nights. Usually 5 or 6 glaring mistakes a game. Some teams might be able to hide those mistakes, but the Pens aren't detailed enough on the defensive side of the puck to cover for him.
Honestly I think he's just as bad as Hunwick if not worse. Hunwick would occasionally look competent with the puck on his stick. JJ has no redeeming qualities.....other than his seemingly nice personality. |

Yeah I really thought about that after I wrote it but just let it go haha. But yeah you aren't wrong with that analysis. |

I think a big difference between the 2 is that Hunwick showed some random offensive flashes where if that’s all you saw you’d think he was effective and JJ doesn’t have those BUT overall JJ is a much better skater |

It's funny how Dumoulin had his worst game ever and no one mention his name. He (frank)ed up big time many many times. - Barnaby36
Most of the defense stunk last game, but in the big picture Dumoulin is a guy who has proven you can trust him most nights.
The Pens know they can win with that top 4 which will look much better when Schultz returns. I really like Pettersson as the third LD, just wish he was supporting a guy who was creating offense rather than just covering for Johnson's mistakes. Want to see him with someone else like Oleksiak. |

Yeah with his flashes of offense and not as bad of contract I will agree. |

All I wanted when he signed was for him to be at least average. I could live with that. Unfortunately he can't even get to that level. |

9 games out of 10 Dumo is going to be solid
9 games out of 10 JJ is going to be awful.
It’s oretty much just how it is. Yes Dumo may have been bad, but he is good way more than he is bad. JJ is bad way more than he is good. That’s just the way it is. There’s a reason why JJ leads the team by 9 goals on goals against at 5v5 while providing dog poop offense at 5v5. - j.boyd919
Jack Johnson, where the puck goes to die in the offence zone and comes alive in the defense zone for the opposing team. |

I find this team doesn't give it its all or play to full potential unless they absolutely have to. When they were last in the conference they turned it on. Its a trend Ive noticed for a few years now. Frustrating as F for a fan but it is what it is. Right now they're 4 points ahead in the 2nd wild card to the next placed team (Sabres) and 7 ahead of the team (Carolina) behind them. Equal games played. They're 1 point out of the 1st WC with 2 games in hand on Mtl. They're only 4 points out of 1st in the division with equal games played. I just dont think the players think things are near as dire as most people around here. |

It was an anomaly for him. He's consistently solid, so when he has a bad night its glaring. This is going to happen with all good players time to time...or for stretches of time (Geno).

They definitely play that way but I'm ok with that as long as they make the playoffs. When they actually play they can beat most teams in the playoffs, we definitely need to add and subtract some pieces but we are fine. |

This is largely true, but they better start recognizing some of these teams aren't going away. The Pens have too much talent to be screwing around with wild card slots. They shouldn't want anything to do with jumping into the Atlantic division in the first round.
Boyd is right, the defense of this team is trash most nights. Schultz hopefully should make a huge difference, but I'm honestly concerned about the brand of hockey this team is playing. It's very similar to the Dan Bylsma "defense be damned" days. Other than the one cup win, his teams struggled in the playoffs because they weren't committed to D. |

That's very true. The Sutter blogs were near daily. But Sutter was also more polarizing. Everyone besides Barnaby acknowledges Johnson is horrible so there's not that much of a point repeating it. Even Grinder threw some roundabout shade at Johnson a couple of blogs ago when he said he agreed with RW's idea of shaking up the pairings and every single pairing idea RW threw out had Johnson scratched. |
