Oilers have placed Spooner & Rattie on waivers. If both clear, & are assigned to the AHL, Oilers would still be $1.395M in full cap value above the ceiling.

By our calculation, that's the equivalent of 2 additional assignments, or a trade, in order to activate Sekera off LTIR.

I don't know what defenseman the Oilers would want from us. I'd trade a lot for RNH, but it'd be tough to take anyone off the current roster. Aho is pretty much NHL ready, that would seem like the most likely candidate.

The Oilers first must move is to replace Chiarelli at GM. Then they need to find a trade partner to move in part of a package, their second most valuable chip in Draisaitl, in exchange for top help on their back line (in 1 or 2 d'men pending their unit ranking), plus either a top, close to ready goalie prospect, or an already established top backup or former #1 starter. They may need a third team to become involved to get that help at both positions.
Both Talbot and Koskinen have not performed well, and are not likely to be re-signed in being UFA eligible after this season. Talbot's formerly good mechanics have disappeared since his Rangers days when having Benoit Allaire as his goalie coach. That, regardless of the fact that he doesn't have the benefit of a top defensive core he did as a Ranger, & when the Rangers did so likewise. He appears to play down on the ice the majority of time the play is deep in his zone, and unable to recover to get set position wise to react timely & properly to many shots.
Otherwise, things could become even uglier in Edmonton should McDavid ever demand to be traded, if he ever realizes that management in key really doesn't know how to build a Cup winner.

I don't totally understand them scouting the Avs. Avs are almost certainly a playoff team, so I can't imagine they're going to trade anyone off the NHL roster.

Yeah that seems a lot more logical. Maybe they're just doing their due diligence at the NHL level in case COL falls out of the playoff race but are still interested in Hayes? Seems like a ton of scouting to do for an unlikely scenario.

I have no idea, it doesn't make much sense to me.
