Part of being a GM in the cap era is making the hard call on organizational assets.

In a perfect, uncapped world, of course Wayne Simmonds would be re-signed.

But that world doesn't exist. Cliff Fletcher has to understand that it's not that you can't extend him. It's that you have to acknowledge that one day -- probably sooner than you think -- you will rue the day that you did.

It's unfortunate, at times, how professional sports goes. You get a core group together for years and you want to see them win.

But it doesn't always work out like that, and you just aren't managing properly in a world of financial restrictions if you simply keep trying to double down on a core when they have miles on the odometer that you simply cannot roll back

- AllInForFlyers

This assumes that it's a fact that a Simmonds extension will not work out. Are you seriously stating that there isn't a situation in a cap environment where a team would re-sign Simmonds?

This is actually funny. Numerous major sports already play outdoors.

Not as much revenue as an outdoor game. The cookie fundraiser comment doesn't have much logic behind it.

- MJL

Ah, the semantic argument. You know what I meant. Changing the norm for change sake to get more attention.

How many NBA games are held outside?

You said MORE REVENUE. which has done what exactly since you like to get to the nitty-grit?

Like the Eagles having no chance?

Put your head together and think what more revenue means for the league? I'll give you some time. Do you think the NBA translates well to the winter time for an outdoor game? What would they wear for uniforms? There is no semantics. What there is, was refuting your comment about other sports which was not a well thought out comment.

Lastly, do you know what hearsay is?

Hey man.

Can you go on record and say the Flyers will not make the playoffs? Or that there is 0% chance they will obtain the #1 selection overall?

When Wentz went down last year and you claimed the Eagles had a 0% chance at the Super Bowl everyone benefited.

Cheers friend.

- Lip_Out

I will go on record as saying the Flyers won't make the playoffs.

15 points out of a playoff spot

34 games remaining
AT LEAST 51 points out of the possible 68 points (75%)

25-8-1

Starting next game they will have to be a better team than the Tampa Bay Lightning for the rest of the way just to maybe get a playoff spot, maybe.

Now if they do make it into the playoffs this year, they will go down as one of the best second half season teams of ALL-TIME.

$10,000 they don't make the playoffs, who wants the bet?

Whether they finish last place or 5th last or 12th last, just as much a possibility they can get the 1st overall.

I'll go with don't make the playoffs but frustratingly play well enough to get themselves out of serious lotto consideration.

I like they are winning, that should give Fletcher more leverage when making trades.

I will not root for them to lose with Carter Hart in net (not just him but esp him). i want the kid to win every start with a shutout. nothing but all positives. i want Provorov and Ghost to find their games. Patrick, TK, Lindblom, Sanheim, etc to get better in a winning environment.

but hey, go all the teams around the Flyers in the standings chicago looks poised to grab 2 today

Again I want Hughes, would love to get Kakko as a consolation prize for having a garbage season.

Neither will help the team if the rest of the players don't improve. Some fans may love bragging about having a star scoring so many points, but if your team can't win then it doesn't matter.

I know more legalese then you ever will, k?

And when I said moving NHL games outdoor, into the elements makes as much sense as moving an NBA game outside, I meant it.

It can be too warm
It can rain
It can be too windy
It can be too cold

YOU said 'other teams play outside' har har!

Knowing Baseball and Football are outdoor sports!

And the novelty of these games are old to many people!

Glad MJL likes them.

They wouldn't, for the same reason we shouldn't.

It's a gimmick that has been beaten to death.

EDIT AND THE NBA COULD HAVE ANY OUTDOOR GAME THEY WANT IN SPRING, FALL, OR IN A DESTINATION CITY.

i would hope the NBA would never have an outdoor game

I HATE playing basketball out doors especially if the wind starts blowing. It would just turn into 1 dimensional down low play

I know you meant it. This obviously proves that you haven't considered all the reasons why outdoor games are good for the NHL. Especially from a fan perspective despite your weak claims to know more than I ever will. Like or enjoying outdoor games as a fan is certainly subjective but that doesn't change the benefits to the league from them. The games generate massive revenue and profit for the league from which everyone benefits. So calling them a gimmick is ignorant.

You insinuated along with your statement of them being corny, that other sports don't have them based on your faulty reasoning. I replied simply that Football and Baseball are already predominantly played outside and the NBA is not a fit for it unless it was very early in the season or in a warm environment city. So your comment about other sports doing it made virtually zero sense.

Wow are you ever a barrel of laughs and fun guy. I’d you don’t like the outdoor games then don’t watch.
Or complain about a few games held outdoors. In case you haven’t paid attention the players like to play in these games. Oops what does that matter it’s all about what you think.

Latest Toronto Blog has possible trade value from the Leafs for Gudas...

I would do either for Gudas

Johnsson or Grundstrom and 2019 4th

OR

2019 2nd and Timashov

Personally I would love Johnsson and his speed on the 3rd line with Patrick and bump Laughton down to the 4C.

Here comes the important part for Fletcher. To not get sucked in by fools gold.

Any validity to Ek’s reporting in regards to vets vowing for Simmonds? If so, why wasn’t that shown on the ice earlier in the season?

Fletcher needs to stay the course and sell off a few pieces to remake the forward mix. Plenty of cap room to upgrade the roster in the offseason as well.

- StepfordSam

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the core is pushing to keep Simmonds. He’s been a good soldier for the Flyers for a very long time, not to mention G and Jake were the ones who pushed to bring JvR back here.

What we’ve seen this season are certain players having a down year. The Flyers didn’t have a good first period but overall, the Flyers have been playing to their capabilities in the last three games.

It’s amazing how good goaltending can inspire a team.

I'm not saying I don't like the trade but I think Laughton has been playing really well. Not sure I want to make him a 4th liner.
