Good stuff coming from 89...
You need to step your game up!
Manufacture some fake news, Botts had Chiarelli in agreement on RNH for Nylander and our 2nd, and convinced Ottawa to trade a signed Stone at 6 for $7m for RNH. |

WMU coach and former NHL coach Andy Murray “Samuelsson will be a 25+ minute a night guy in the NHL someday” - Pegullaville
I found some quotes from coach Murray back in December:
"Scouts have told me that he was the steal of the draft".
"He's played more minutes than other defenseman on our team and faces a lot of tough match up situations with the other teams best players".
"He needs a couple years with us but he's going to be a great pro".
Another thing to keep in mind is that WMU is playing with 16 underclassmen so there are a lot of freshmen that don't have a lot of experience and Samuelsson is dominant with his play on this very young team.
I have said it before but if you project out 3-4 years the D will consist of guys like Samuelsson and Laaksonen in the top 4 to go along with Dahlin, Pilut and Wristoe. Throw in Borgen and McCabe in the 5-6 slot.
And one important thing to mention about Borgen. He has been very good in Rochester this year and imo is the most improved Amerk. His development is right on track. |

That’s also what people seem to forget as well. Yes the first round picks we have are, best case scenario, two years away as mid round picks. However, there is nothing stopping us from signing a Ryan Dzingel, Gustav Nyquist, Jakob Silfverberg in free agency on 3-4 year deals to be stopgaps until these guys properly develop. |

the d prospect pool is deep now for the sabres
partly due to landing dahlin, and partly due to botts addressing it right away as murray ignored it
we are also set in net, grab one in the 5th or 6th round every year to keep pipeline full
centers and wingers for the next 2 years caption |

I think our prospect pool is very good and I agree, especially on D. We need a stud center or winger at the draft.

There will definitely be some scorers. If Colefield was 6ft instead of 5’6 he’s a top 5 pick easily. He could be there in the 10-15 range if teams haven’t learnt from the Debrincant fiasco. Arthur Kaliyev intrigues me as he has probably the best release in the class. Raphael Lavoie is a big body that reminds me a lot of Corey Perry and would look good next to Eichel as well. Maybe one of Zegras/Boldy/Krebs/Turcotte(unlikely but maybe since he’s been injured it could help) could fall into our lap as well. |

From article on The Athletic, Scott Burnside.
Buffalo Sabres: C-minus
The Sabres ran the gamut from A-plus play to D or worse of late, which sees them settle in here with a C-minus. The problem for the Sabres is that, having won 10 straight games early in the season, the expectations went through the roof. They hit the break four points back of the second wild card and now the pressure is on head coach Phil Housley to get the team back in its earlier groove. There is also no small amount of pressure on GM Jason Botterill to take advantage of the team’s surprising start to make some adds at the trade deadline to give this squad it’s best opportunity to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
A simple calculation of remaining points based on their record projects a finish of 92sh points.
However, I feel a better projection is to use their record of 38 games without the win streak to project out the remaining 34 games and add that to their 54 points earned with the 10 game win streak...that projects to a finish of 85 points. (so I consider the 10 game win streak an anomoly based on thecresults of a larger 34 game sample).
Some will argue against that, I'll simply say that they are projected to finish between 85 and 92 points, both of which are outside the mid-to-upper 90s to qualify for the playoffs.
The point is, IF Botts becomes a Buyer -- he better use a decent asset (future picks, NHL-ready prospects ) to acquire a player that makes this roster better for the long haul, not some rental to run to the 2nd wild card slot. I would however be ok if he trades one of our rentals for another rental in an area of need...that's much different. |

Good post. I was reviewing the draft not too long ago and many of those players mentioned would be available for us. It looks like the bottom part of the 1st rd is top loaded with forwards. McMichael, Brink and Grewe could also be in that mix. A few months to go to see how some of these players move up or down in the mocks. I just have this feeling Botts will lean to US players or Europeans.

I think you need to look at the remaining schedules of us, Pitt, Carolina and Boston to get an idea who has the edge for the WC. You're probably right though, 85-92 is probably realistic. My gut tells me we will miss regardless of what we do at the deadline. Hope I'm wrong, sure would like to see some playoff hockey.

right now, they would get bounced early as all the other teams have to do is shut down 1 line
I am not sure why the kids are not getting a shot instead of some of the scrubs |

I do find it interesting that there are a boat load of US players in the top 15 or so
And that GMTM and Botts have both stayed away from the Russian factor.
They have invested heavily into European Scouts so I love the potential for them to uncover another gem like Laaksonen! That will pay huge dividends in the futurexwhen they need to rotate in lower cost players on ECL to replace aging, high cost Vets.
They are on a good path, don't short circuit now in some dumb GMTM-esq like fashion! |
